The Experience

Sheep graze behind this old bergerie in the grounds of your hosts’ manor house. Cook al fresco in a rustic, open kitchen on the covered terrace; enjoy breakfast, dinner or sharing platters here overlooking the beautiful garden with its huge linden trees – a very special treat.

The suite is light, lofty and beamed; the little Bergère will bring you close to nature – leave the top part of the stable door open and watch the stars come out one by one. On chilly days light the wood-burning stove and plan your next adventures.

Stroll through the garden and orchard to find bee hives, chicken and sheep. Hike through gentle, rolling countryside with munching cows and donkeys. Hop in the car for farmers’ markets, superb old churches and a magnificent beach at Trouville.

Reviews

Sheila, London

This was our second visit in two years with Hetty and Ruud: the warmest of welcomes, a cosy room and truly memorable breakfasts in beautiful surroundings on our own covered terrace. There's plenty to do in the surrounding area (Calvados in Normandy) but this is also a special place to rest, read and just unwind. We'd love to come again.

Katherine, Berkshire

Such a lovely place to stay! Beautiful rooms and setting. Hetty was so lovely, friendly and welcoming. The two children loved their room which was well set up with games for them to play. We stayed for a night each way as a stopover for our holiday. Our only regret was not having more time there and we will definitely be returning. I couldn’t recommend it more!

John, Bristol

Ruud and Hetty have created a pair of lovely living spaces in some of the old and very traditional outbuildings in the grounds of thier property, located in rural Normandy. The designs are innovative, practical and fun, but at the same time tasteful and traditional - the creativey of Ruud and Hetty shines through. It's just such a great place to go to relax and discover wonderful Normandy. We will be going back! Hetty and Ruud are great hosts. Friendly, welcoming, and nothing is too much trouble.

Debbie, Ingatestone

A wonderful stay, sadly for only one night, wished so much I could have stayed longer. Such a warm welcome from Hettie and Ruud, made me feel so at home. Beautiful room, with en-suite shower room. A delicious dinner was served on a lovely terrace within the peace and tranquility of the surrounding countryside. Breakfast was a delight with lots of local and homemade produce, I didn't need to eat again until dinner that evening such was the generosity of portions. Will be back to stay longer next time.

Caroline, Tisbury

What a wonderful find, Hetty and Ruud are the most fabulous hosts. Our room was gorgeous and we slept with the stable door open, supper in our outside dinning room was delicious. We will be returning as often as possible!

Location

The neighbourhood

It's very rural here so the walking is easy with plenty of animals to spot and birds to watch. Just a short drive away is a nice village called Cormeilles which has very good restaurants and a lively market on Friday mornings. In the summer there are farmers' markets on Sundays with music and dancing.

Local points of interest from Rudolf Walthaus

  • Trouville with a wonderful sandy beach, where you can eat the freshest seafood you've ever tasted. Deauville with every morning a lively market or visit the Hippodrome for a horse race or a polo match.
  • If you like castles, you'll love Château du Champ de Bataile, 17th century. Magnificent gardens with fountains and topiaries. Have a high tea there. Combine this with the Harcourt Castle and Arboretum. The picturesque Benedictine Abbey in Le Bec-Hellouin.
  • A picturesque harbor, a maze of leafy, cobbled streets and authentic timber-framed houses. Around kunchtime; head to the Vieux Bassin and visit the iconic Église Sainte-Catherine. Easy to see why the Impressionists fell in love with Honfleur.
  • There are many must see locations in Normandy, such as the landing beaches at Arromanches and Omaha. The Memorial in Caen and the Bayeux tapestry is also well worth a visit. The Bergerie is only 10 minutes from a beautiful Zoo.
  • Visit Giverny with the house and gardens of Monet. Such a lovely place! Rouen, less then one hour from the Bergerie. The town of Jeanne d'Arc and the restored Cathédrale de Nôtre-Dame which is one of the best known cathédrales in France.
  • From the Bergerie to the Eiffel Tower is only 160km... or relax and unwind on the wooden sun beds in the garden of the Bergerie. We want to ensure you have a wonderful time with us, so please contact us with any questions you may have.

Introducing

Rudolf Walthaus

Rudolf and Hetty bought this place, along with nearly three hectares, as a family holiday home many years ago. They restored the house meticulously and created the wonderful garden from scratch, then decided to live here permanently. They have never regretted it and love sharing their little slice of rural bliss with guests.
