The Experience
The layout is spacious and semi open-plan with lots of room to spread out among the antiques and family heirlooms: on the walls hang paintings by Marie-Christine’s talented mother. On cooler days you can light the fire: find plenty of books to read, games to play and films to watch. Three generous bedrooms are on the first floor – all with good views over the garden.
A country house style kitchen is stocked with basics but your first breakfast will also be waiting along with a bottle of wine or cider. A private chef can be rustled up or cookery courses arranged. Wander out into two hectares of gardens with mature trees, tumbling roses and lush lawns. Two terraces are ideal, one for shade and another for a sunny evening drink.
A trampoline, swing and sandpit will keep little ones happy and you can play tennis or table tennis. Drive five minutes into Bayeux to buy amazing local produce at the famous Saturday morning market.

We had a fabulous week at the Manoir. The house was beautiful and decorated in a classic French style. We had a welcome pack including the most beautiful wild plum jam. The kitchen has everything you need to make use of the superb local produce. The garden is such a relaxing place to sit and read and we saw lots of different birds as well as red squirrels. We enjoyed the market at Port en Bessin and the numerous attractions in Bayeaux. Christian and Marie Christian were superb hosts. They asked us into the chateau for a drink and a tour of the house. They could not have been kinder.

Charming cottage (converted coaching house) in the grounds of the beautiful Barbeville Chateau. Le Manoir is extremely spacious and equipped with antique furniture, paintings, books etc, including a downstairs entrance hall, kitchen, dining area and living room. It is set in lovely grounds which include a tennis court which our sons used. Le manoir is only a 5 minute drive from Bayeux, a lovely Normandy town well worth visiting for more than simply the tapestry. The coast and beaches are only 10 to 15 minutes away too. Christian and his family were lovely, unobtrusive hosts. A memorable stay.

I stayed at Barbeville with my family (wife and four boys) and had a fantastic time. The house is wonderfully quiet and well appointed with an excellent large garden including a tennis court, pet rabbits, swings, football goals which kept the boys fully entertained. There are many things to do locally (it’s possible to spend the whole week doing the WW2 beaches) including Bayeux museums (5 min drive), lovely beaches and countryside. Christian and Marie-Christine are perfect hosts, attentive in just the right way. We all had a great holiday and look forward to a return.

Location
The neighbourhood
Bayeux has a 12th century cathedral, some pretty half-timbered houses and many 17th and 18th century mansions. It's also vibrant with shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. Visit Port-en-Bessin, a fishing village where you can buy the morning catch off the harbour side. D Day beaches are thirty minutes, there's a sandy beach at Omaha and a golf club. You can visit cider makers too.
Local points of interest from Christian & Marie-Christine Delecourt
- Delight your taste buds with fresh seafood and fish from the fisherman at Port-en-Bessin. Don’t miss the Sunday morning market too – or on Saturday mornings in Bayeux, where wandering from stall to stall is just lovely (plus restaurants on the sea front).
- Le Bessin, the region around Bayeux is full of manoirs and châteaux from the 14th – 18th centuries, much like Le Chateau de Barbeville itself.
- Don’t miss the bunkers at Longues-sur-Mer, La Pointe du Hoc, its steep cliffs and the very impressive American cemetery. Arromanches is where the largest artificial port ever was constructed - discover its history in the 360 Circular Cinema.
- Further afield is the famous Mont Saint-Michel and the charming port of Honfleur, home to famous Norman painters. Why not try visit the Chausey Islands with their exceptional tidal range during high tides?
- Our terraces and flowery gardens will entice you to rest and relax, or try your hand at tennis, trampolining, ping-pong. You’ll be surrounded by walking or cycling paths – whilst being in deep countryside and yet close to the sandy beaches.
- We’re 2.5km from Bayeux, with fascinating curiosities from the Middle Ages all the way to modern day – the cathedral, the renowned tapestry, you’ll be transported back to the age of William the Conqueror.

Introducing
Christian & Marie-Christine Delecourt
The château (which was occupied by German and then British troops during the war) has been in the family since the mid-18th century, eventually passing down to Marie-Christine. She and Christian have always spent summers and holidays here but have now settled permanently. They will be here to greet you but will otherwise leave you to your own devices. When they are away Jocelyn the housekeeper takes over.
Comfortable and welcoming property, very well equipped. Friendly owners. It was useful to have a washing machine and dryer, and we were delighted to spot a red squirrel on the terrace. We also liked the church next door and its bells-bells three times a day. Christian and Marie-Christine hospitable invited us for a drink and told us something about the history of the château, and provided a good breakfast for our first morning with bread, butter, jam, coffee etc. The most convenient supermarket is the Super U Express. Take the D613 towards Bayeux, across 2? roundabouts and it’s on the left.
