The Experience

Elegantly built from local limestone, with stone staircases and classical gables, this manor hasn’t changed outwardly since it was the home of the 17th century de Mathan family. Drive through the baroque arch and crunch up the drive for drinks under a parasol on the terrace. The gardens are made up of lawns, mature trees and a lily pond. Have a look for the ancient bread oven and apple cider press.

The 21 bedrooms (some in the outbuildings and converted barns, some suitable for wheelchair users) have been sympathetically revived. Expect four-poster beds, oak beams, original fireplaces. Bathrooms are big, most have tubs. Breakfast is a generous buffet of bacon, eggs, patisserie, cheese, fruit salad, freshly squeezed juice.

Stroll into nearby Crépon, there’s a church and café. Explore Bayeux and the landing beaches (you’re only two miles from the coast). Then head back to relax, read a book, think about where you’ll have supper.

Reviews

A beautifully resorted historic manor house in the centre of the D-Day Landings area - we loved the spacious rooms, the 18th-century authenticity and the tranquillity of the courtyard and gardens.

Nicky, Sawday's Inspector

We only stayed for 2 nights but what a wonderful experience. We had a junior suite, which was very comfortable and spacious. Dinner at Ferme de la Ranconniere was to die for. Do not miss out. The staff were very friendly and made us feel very welcome.

Location

The neighbourhood

There are myriad villages and towns to visit: historical Bayeux is 20 minutes, seaport town Courselles-sur-Mer is 15 minutes and chockablock with seafood restaurants, Arromanches with its Port Winston Churchill harbour is 10 minutes. It's a walk (three miles) to the British Normandy Memorial, built in 2021 above Gold Beach to commemorate those killed in 1944. Eat at La Cale in nearby Asnelles.

Introducing

Isabelle & Koen Sileghem

Owners Isabelle and Koen have run this hotel, and another local property, for years. Isabelle's family bought several properties in the area, including Manoir de Mathan. The building was thoughtfully refurbished: carefully revealing and enhancing, integrating bathrooms, giving bedrooms space and light; the doors opened in 2007. They employ a great team but are often around to chat to guests
