The Experience

A brilliant marriage of old stone, modern design and reclaimed timbers, the U-shaped Normandy farmhouse is so cleverly linked that you don’t notice the joins. The pebbled courtyard on one side, the pool and deck on the other send light through generous windows onto the squishy sofas, distressed brocante, glorious timber gallery and gilt frames (James dealt in antiques and still can’t resist collecting) of the huge living area which feels both luxuriously sophisticated and totally relaxed. The kitchen is, of course, equipped with everything the modern cook could want and charming Debbie leaves an unusually generous welcome basket. You can keep an eye on the children in the pool while rustling up that feast of local specialities. The double rooms are lovely, downstairs in contemporary style, upstairs more romantically antique, and smart bright bathrooms have good-sized showers; the simpler nautical-theme triples are equally welcoming. From this private haven in a wee journey’s-end hamlet, venture forth for days at the beach (5km away) or visits to Gothic Coutances, the ruined chateau of Gratot, Norman-green golf courses – and lots more.

We loved our week at La Brocanterie which exceeded our expectations. We received a very warm welcome from James, both when making our booking and when we arrived, including some edible goodies. The property is perfect for a family, whatever the weather. We particularly enjoyed the pool, with wafts of lavender from the nearby flowerbeds. The kitchen has everything you could need. We also made good use of the games and puzzles that were available which made for some fun family moments. Hope we'll be coming back in the future as there is so much more we'd like to explore nearby.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from James Mayhew

  • La Cale, our favourite beach shack for the best moules frites and sausages is 10 mins away. Get a table outside with your feet in the sand, and watch the the sunset. Or try the BOA, a pop up bar at Gouville beach has great tapas, beers and cocktails.
  • For a bit of brocante visit La Cle du Temps. (15 mins) A huge 'Depôt Vente' full of anything and everything old and quirky .. New things arrive every day. Prices are reduced on all items regularly until they sell.
  • Gouville-sur-mer is known for its oysters. Buy the freshest oysters, mussels and crabs directly from the growers in Gouville. We've got all the seafood utensils you'll need for cooking your lobster, opening shells & cracking your crab claws etc!
  • If you're coming to this part of France you'll already know about its history.. La B is ideally placed for day trips to Mt St Michel, the landing beaches, the Bayeux tapestry, the Cite de la Mer (visit a nuclear submarine!), And masses more
  • Take one of La B's bikes and bicycle to the village for your baguette & croissants. M. Lebreton in the local garage (2 mins) & has more bikes for hire for €2 a day. If you need them.
  • Plenty of activities abound, from playgrounds, mini golf and pedaloes, to horse riding on the beach, sand yachting, kite surfing, stand up boarding, tennis, golf, bungy jumping, forest adventures, paint ball, laser game, karting; something for everyone
