The Experience

It’s a serene spot, with the ancient cider press in the pretty front garden, an apple orchard which you’re welcome to wander and paths into the woodlands below – walks will be sublime, especially for autumn colours. You sleep peacefully in either of the suites, both with views over the garden, sumptuous beds and robes for relaxing in. Each suite has its own warm bathroom with fluffy towels and scented soaps and gels.

Wake to a continental breakfast of fresh breads, cereals, fruit, yogurt and nuts, or Russell’s speciality ‘Pain Catalan’ and, if you ask in advance, Russell can sometimes offer a table d’hôte dinner – he is an exceptional cook. Otherwise there are good restaurants in Domfront, 8kms. Visit the cheese farm nearby for tastings as well as the excellent Fromagerie Des Rochas Bagnoles.

Explore this nourishing area, ride horses, cycle or walk; return to a warming fire in the elegant salon or a quiet time in the Reading Room.

Reviews

Except for my own home, not far from Champsecret, I can't think of a more relaxing place to spend time than La Pommeraie. To be looked after by Andrea and Russell would be a real plus. They couldn't have given me a warmer welcome and I am filled with admiration for all the energy they are putting into returning their house into the home it has been to generations of country-lovers.

It's been a long time since I slept in such a wonderful bed and such a comfortable room. I recommend this magical place. The garden is magnificent, and the hosts are charming and very attentive.

My husband and I spent 5 nights at La Pommeraie this summer, and loved it. The room was stunning - huge, very tastefully decorated, with a lovely big bed and a luxurious bathroom. Andrea and Russel are attentive hosts and lovely to talk to. And the area feels like its name, a secret garden in an oasis of calm. Nice walks to do in the countryside, completely dark nights, and restful silence. It was such a treat! Really recommend.

Location

The neighbourhood

Champsecret (2km) has an ancient forge with a blast furnace built in 1767, worth a visit. You're on the edge of the Andaines National Forest, for wonderful bird watching, particularly in spring when you'll hear, and hopefully see, cuckoos and woodpeckers among others. There's a riding school nearby, and Domfront has lovely medieval buildings. Bagnoles de l'Orne is 14km, Flers 20 mins.

Local points of interest from Andrea Craig

  • Visit the nearby medieval city of Domfront and wonder through the cobbled streets and hidden courtyards. Make your way up to the 12th century fortress where 1000 years of history might take you more than one day to explore!
  • The lovely spa town of Bagnoles De L'Orne is a short drive away. There's a beautiful lake you can stroll around and chocolate shops to sniff out. The 9 hole golf course offers exceptional nature over 12 hectares of meadow crossed by a stream.
  • In Bagnoles, one of our favourites, the 7Km Velo rail circuit that follows the old railway line passing peaceful green scenery and crossing the magnificent Andaine Forest. In July and August you can take the velorail for a picnic in the forest!
  • La Pommeraie overlooks the Andaine Forest that stretches east to west across the horizon. Discover the historical remains, remarkable trees, rocks, hiking a a gorgeous trail circuit.
  • The French equestrian traditions of Normandy are part of UNESCO's list of intangible heritage. We can introduce you our neighbouring equestrian centre for a horse riding experience right here in the hamlet of Le Jardin.
  • If you just want to relax and enjoy some mindfulness, our lovely neighbour Raphael is a yoga instructor and we have some lovely spots where you can choose to lay your mat down for a wonderful private session.

Introducing

Andrea Craig

Charming Andrea and Russell also live here with their two friendly Lhasa Apso dogs. They have lovingly restored what was a bit of a wreck into a wonderful place to stay. They look after you with grace and are a good source of advice about the area. They can also host small events or weddings in the orchard in summer.
