The Experience
On the top of a small hill near the village of Pérignac is a tiny hamlet and this, an old cognac farm. Its creamy cluster of beautiful buildings includes the owners’ home, a few barns and, on the other side of a courtyard, your one-storey retreat. Named ‘La Villa’ by Annette and Mark – it’s gorgeous! All is on one floor, open plan and spacious. The views are far-reaching over vineyards and fields. The light airy living room is tasteful and unfussy with an Asian/French fusion decor: stone walls, terracotta floors, a seagrass sofa and armchair, and a wonderful carved Javanese screen with a door. Behind which is an Indonesian four-poster, wrapped in crisp linen and draped with cream muslin, cool and serene. Bowl basins have been hand-carved from stone, the corner bath is a bubbling jacuzzi, and there are two showers – one being of the private, walled outdoor variety! Canoe on the Charente, visit the coast and the islands of Ré and Oléron, let the town of Cognac charm you. Then it’s back to a glass of wine in the hammock, a romantic supper in the teak pavilion, and a midnight splash in your own solar heated pool.

Idyllic setting, totally luxurious in every way. The attention to detail such as the incredible lighting everywhere and top notch pool is second to none. Wonderful hosts who will do ANYTHING for you but are not obtrusive. Superb base for visiting both the coast and local area. We really could not fault the place which had everything you could possibly think of in the villa. Annette does a lovely welcome pack which is so personal and touching and she even gave me the recipe for her tapenade! Totally peaceful and relaxing without feeling isolated- it is only a short walk into the village.

Idyllic. We wanted peace and quiet in a villa with quality facilities and this is exactly what we got. Surrounded by vine fields this is a quiet hamlet. A former pig sty (hard to believe) Mark & Annette have transformed the building and environs into a wonderful place to stay. Private garden and a wonderful salt water pool complete the facilities. The hosts are caring and guide you thoughtfully and with knowledge of the local area. We had a wonderful two week stay.

We stayed at Le Courty for our honeymoon and it was perfect. Mark and Annette were amazing hosts, recommending excellent restaurants, places to visit and helping us to book things as we speak very little French. Le Courty has everything you could ever need and has been beautifully decorated. We could relax by our own private pool and enjoy views of the surrounding countryside in this peaceful hamlet, and it's good location meant it was a short drive to nearby villages and places of interest. Despite a few days of bad weather we had a great time and would love to visit again!

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Mark & Annette Gray
- Our guests love dining in their private pavilion next to the pool - beautifully lit at night, it's the perfect spot for a romantic dinner for two! There is a café/restaurant in the village, and we're happy to recommend our own many favourites in the area.
- Visit the beautiful Atlantic coast: La Rochelle, Fouras or Royan and its neighbouring beaches, or spend an unforgettable day eating oysters on the beach at Ile d'Oléron or joining the jet set on the beautiful beaches and in the quaint villages of Ile de Ré
- You’ll find history, restaurants and shops in the nearby towns of Pons and Cognac. You’ll love the tasting tours at Hennessy, Courvoisier, Martell and other famous cognac houses. Both towns have charming cobbled streets and Cognac also has a golf course.
- The charming Gironde Estuary towns of Talmont & Mortagne are only 45 mins away. Enjoy a delicious seafood lunch in the pretty port at Mortagne; or discover Talmont's 12C church perched on the rocks and explore its flower-lined streets, and shops.
- Just over an hour’s drive away, enjoy exploring the pretty villages and canals of the Marais Poitevin or Venise Verte as it’s also known. Go boating along the canals in traditional punts, birdwatching in the marshlands, or just enjoy the stunning scenery.
- Beautiful, riverside Bordeaux just over an hour’s drive away has ample shops and cafes, as well as its new Cité du Vin wine museum, and world-famous Médoc vineyards. More tasting opportunities await in the beautiful citadel city of Blaye and in Bourg.

A beautiful villa with the one of the best private pools we've ever had. It was a shame the weather was poor that so we only made limited use of it! Annette and Mark were perfect hosts - so friendly and helpful. The only improvement would be to have air conditioning in the bedroom as it was quite warm even during cool weather.
