The Experience

On the top of a small hill near the village of Pérignac is a tiny hamlet and this, an old cognac farm. Its creamy cluster of beautiful buildings includes the owners’ home, a few barns and, on the other side of a courtyard, your one-storey retreat. Named ‘La Villa’ by Annette and Mark – it’s gorgeous! All is on one floor, open plan and spacious. The views are far-reaching over vineyards and fields. The light, airy living room is tasteful and unfussy with an Asian/French fusion decor: stone walls, terracotta floors, a seagrass sofa and armchair, and a wonderful antique Javanese carved interior wall. The air-conditioned bedroom has a teak four-poster, wrapped in crisp linen and draped with cream muslin, cool and serene. Bowl basins have been hand-carved from stone, the corner bath is a bubbling jacuzzi, and there are two showers – one being of the private, walled outdoor variety! Canoe on the Charente, visit the coast and the islands of Ré and Oléron, let the town of Cognac charm you. Then it’s back to a glass of wine in the hammock, a romantic supper in the teak pavilion, and a midnight splash in your own solar heated pool.

Reviews

Zoe and Brian, Lancashire

Wow, what a place! The villa has exceeded all expectations. Thank you, Mark and Annette for sharing this slice of paradise with us! Highlights have been: the pool; cycling into Perignac for fresh bread and pastries; and exploring Ile d'Oleron, Royan, St Georges de Didonne, Pons and Cognac. The weather has forced us to slow down and relax. What a place to do so. You are the perfect hosts: warm and welcoming but then allowing us the freedom to relax without interruption. Special thanks for the meal and wine on arrival - absolutely delicious and very welcome! We have loved our week at Le Courty.

Thank you for the most wonderful week here at Le Courty - it has been so peaceful and relaxing. A beautiful villa in such lovely surroundings. Annette and Mark, you have made us feel so welcome. We would love to return one day (perhaps when we need to re-stock our pineau!)

Graham and Maxine, Wiltshire

Last out, first in of 2025. Great to be back here, a week of relaxing. Mixed weather but managed a swim or two. Already planned our stay for 2026. A wonderful place, a piece of heaven.

It's all been said before! Caring hosts who have been unobtrusive but there if you should need them. Wonderful villa - really well appointed and with a fantastic pool in a wonderful setting. It's made us want to return and we are - all booked up for May 2025. See you both then!

Gareth, Bishop Auckland

La Villa at Le Courty is simply holiday perfection. It’s secluded and quiet without being too far from civilisation when you need it. The villa itself is so comfortable and well appointed - you will want for nothing - and that pool, my goodness!! Plenty of little spots around the place to catch that beautiful, big sunset with a glass of wine. The owners Annette and Mark were also great - they were super welcoming and helpful when we needed advice, but left us to enjoy our holiday in peace otherwise. 10/10 will definitely stay again.

Local points of interest from Mark & Annette Gray

  • Our guests love dining in their very own wooden pavilion overlooking both the vineyard and the private pool. A summer salad, a glass of chilled wine, and freshly baked bread from our local bakery - it’s the perfect recipe for a romantic dinner for two!
  • The local ‘guinguettes’ (pop-up summer cafés) on the Charente riverbank tend not to be found in the usual guides. You’ll love spending lunchtimes or balmy summer evenings savouring the tastes and special vibes that abound at these simple summer eateries!
  • Dine at the popular little café in the village, or in the square by the towering C12th castle keep in nearby Pons. In Cognac, as well as the famous brandy houses, you’ll find a large selection of restaurants, including charming eateries on the riverbank.
  • Charming Talmont-sur-Gironde - 45 mins away. One of France’s official ‘most beautiful villages’, explore its car-free streets lined with hollyhocks, pastel-coloured homes, shops and cafés; and admire its C12 church perched on rocks overlooking the estuary.
  • Visit the beautiful Atlantic coast: La Rochelle, Fouras, or Royan and neighbouring beaches; or spend an unforgettable day on the beach at Ile d'Oléron sampling local oysters; or join the jet set on the sandy beaches and in the quaint villages of Ile de Ré.
  • You’ve heard of the Medoc on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, but have you also heard of the citadel town of Blaye on the right bank? Enjoy exploring the superb citadel yourself or take one of the paid tours, followed by lunch overlooking the estuary.
