The Experience

Lavender fields are the backdrop to this Provençal mas; cicadas and birdsong the soundtrack. A fortified medieval farm, its high stone walls and rocky bluff now enclose the owners’ house and three eco-friendly gîtes that gaze south and west to the village. Bastide and Fenière are the family cottages, with large living areas, geothermal heating and corner kitchens. Bastide has wicker chairs, shelves sunk into chunky stone walls, a vine-shaded terrace; Fenière, up in the hayloft, has sweeping views and a cast-iron table under a chestnut. Simple bedrooms have floaty curtains, Provençal paintings, plain furniture; a touch of luxury in king-size beds and shiny bathrooms (only one in Bastide). For couples there’s L’Etable, a rustic studio whose mint-green doors frame views of terrace, gardens and deep (but fenced) natural pool. Also: a solar shower, hammock and electric barbecue for grilling sausages from the village market. Beyond, a sleepy stream with a hump-backed ‘Roman’ bridge, a new cycle path, farms, fêtes and inspiration for painters and poets in Luberon natural park – gentle Alain and Françoise will advise.

Reviews

We loved our stay here. Myself and my husband, our 8 month old and his granny took one of the apartments. Beautiful views of the historical village across the lavender field, organically farmed. The natural pool was so refreshing, delicious boulangerie that we walked to each morning and good market including a good clothes stand. Two good restaurants in the village for supper and very helpful team in the local pharmacy. My partner drove to mount ventoux and cycled up. And it was easy to explore the local area and it felt less touristy than areas we had stayed in previously.

We had a lovely stay at Mas De La Baou - it was a quite and peaceful soace amongst the hub bub of Provence in the summer. My husband and I enjoyed chatting with the owners regarding many subjects. It was just the unwind we needed at the start of our holidays.

Jack, London

What a lovely place to stay. Even more beautiful that the photos suggest. We stayed in the smallest Gite. Perfectly spacious for two. Private courtyard with view over the gardens, pool & town. Even though there were two other couples staying, the way each accommodation is positioned it feels like you have the place to yourself. Big beautiful garden and the pool is amazing; crystal clear water & perfect for hot days. Françoise & Alain are very friendly hosts & are happy to gives suggestions of things to do in the local area. Good supermarket & petrol station 10 minute walk away. Recommend.

Liz and Mark, Shropshire

We have had a wonderful week, the house was perfect, with everything we needed, and it remained beautifully cool thanks to thick stone walls and shutters. We ate outside under the vine, and spent many happy hours sitting by the stunning pool watching butterflies and dragonflies and listening to the frogs and the nightingale singing. François and Alain were so helpful, suggesting places we should visit, and we had some wonderful days out in really beautiful places. It was lovely to be able to walk through the lavender field to the small town of Cereste for the bakery and restaurants.

Fanny, London

A wonderful week in the the most beautiful and tranquil surroundings - delightfully furnished accommodation with every need catered for. Our hosts were so friendly and helpful and suggested many glorious places to explore - thank you both so much Francoise - we could not have asked for more xx

Local points of interest from Alain et Françoise Alter

  • Think that Provence, especially Luberon, no longer needs to be described? We bet we can make you discover a more authentic and unknown Provence. Beautiful sceneries, quiet old villages (sometimes in ruins), amazing "bories", Roman and Gallic vestiges...
  • Do you like walking through the thousand scents of the Mediterranean scrubland? You won't have time, in a week or even two, to enjoy all the trails we will advise you to walk. You'll want to come back!
  • Swimming in our natural pool surrounded by flowers, is a rare treat. You will feel the true purity of water without chemicals, and you will see the small animals that live in plants: frogs, tadpoles, dragonflies ... Your kids will love it for sure!
  • There are European beavers dams on the creek near our home.
  • The discovery of ocher mines and superb trails between orange cliffs will be a highlight of your stay.
