You couldn’t be better placed for ambling round historic Avignon than at this B&B within the city’s old walls. The latest incarnation of a building that has in its lifetime been part of a monastery, a barracks and a factory, there are now five light, spacious en-suite rooms in the main house and an annexe converted into a cosy apartment for four. Dutch hosts welcome you with a glass of wine and you start the day in the newly-glazed breakfast room with pastries, ham, cheese and eggs. Though the Palais des Papes and Pont D’Avignon are only a short stroll, it’s blissfully calm. Cool off in the sparkling pool (it’s heated out of season too) after a busy day sightseeing.
