The Experience

A vast drawing room is just the ticket for sprawling in comfort, playing a game, chatting by the log fire, planning your next outing or being happy not doing much. Cooks will be busy in the professionally designed kitchen, adorned with every tool you can think of to whip up a storm. You eat in the dining room (seating for 18) or out in the garden.

Bedrooms (two on the first floor, two on the second and one in a separate building, plus a dormitory for four) have lovely views, swish bathrooms with proper baths and showers over, restful colours – it’s quiet here. Mostly you’ll be in the pretty garden, enjoying al fresco meals, playing games on the lawn, cooling off in the pool, sunbathing or visiting the sauna. There’s a games room, pétanque and tennis court for the more active.

The surrounding valleys are criss-crossed with peaceful walking paths and you’re less than an hour’s drive from Le Mans for events throughout the year.

We think you'll love

  • The fact that even if you invite everybody, there's still space for those who wish to hide away – especially in the garden with meadows, coppices, an orchard
  • Visiting the weekly markets in the town squares of all the local villages and towns, bringing back good food and wine
  • Being so near to Paris (just over an hour) and Angers – the TGV station is just eight minutes from the house

Reviews

It would be dreamy to rent this gorgeous late medieval manor, with its big bedrooms, gorgeous gardens, oodles of character and kitchen designed by and for a Michelin-starred chef from Paris. The Mayenne is a quiet land of valleys, studded with pretty villages and manors often founded during the Hundred Years' War. History is everywhere, but slower holidays of eating and walking would work perfectly.

Location

The neighbourhood

There's much to do from the door: walking and cycling will be sublime through this gentle countryside full of stud farms, châteaux and wildlife. The Abbaye de Solesmes is a 15-minute drive, Angers less than an hour for cathedral, museums and the historical town centre. Eat well at Sablé-sur-Sarthe – either at Le Grand Hotel de Solesmes or La Terrasse. Le Mans will please motoring fans.
