The Experience

Come for delicious food: vegetables from the garden, organic, seasonal local produce and as much that is foraged as possible. Breakfast is a buffet, served in the dining room or outside on the terrace: home baked bread, homemade jams, fresh fruit salad, pastries and yogurts, or something cooked like frittata or an omelette. Table d’hôte menus are planned in advance but will usually include soup, pâté, a meat dish, cheese, then pudding.

You sleep in comfortable, traditional bedrooms, one in the attic, with fresh flowers, antique furniture and pretty windows. There’s a real fire in the dining room for chilly days, and a couple of comfy chairs. Plan your day here before heading out. You’re in the town square of Saint-Pierre-du-Lorouër, quiet and residential and surrounded by farmland, so walks are lovely.

Return to cool off in the little wooden plunge pool or enjoy a spot of yoga with Sarah, a qualified teacher.

Reviews

This is a very special place - a charming, low-key B&B. A fine old house, owned and run by enthusiastic Scottish owners with humour. Their great love for their adopted home and the nature surrounding is infectious. I cannot wait to visit them and taste their foraged and homegrown cooking!

A beautiful town house stylishly restored and Sarah couldn't have been more welcoming. Dinner in the garden was a delightful way to begin our holiday in France.

Christopher

An excellent B & B; lovely house with great character and rooms. Sarah was very welcoming and friendly and we enjoyed dinner in the courtyard at the back of the house where we met the 'le chaton rouge'. It is about 4 to 5 hours south from Calais and an ideal place to stop on the way to the Loire or further south.

John

This was our first B & B on our visit to France. We stayed at three B & B's over five days and this was the very best. It is a delightful house with a very artistic mix of old and new. Sarah was the perfect host and provided a great selection of food for breakfast and a wonderful dinner in the outdoor dining room. In fact the best meals we had in France. Wished we could have stayed longer. We would highly recommend this B & B for a short or longer stay.

Kay

We were warmly welcomed by our hostess Sarah. Our rooms was spacious and very clean with a really lovely shower room and beautiful decor. We enjoyed a lovely dinner in the outdoor dining room and had a very peaceful night's sleep afterwards. The breakfast was very substantial and tasty. We really enjoyed the soda bread! We would highly recommend a stay at Le Chaton Rouge. If we are in the area again we will most certainly return!

Location

The neighbourhood

The Forêt de Bercé is a short stroll away with many trails for walking, cycling or riding. There are lots of pretty villages and towns to explore along the river Loir, with restaurants serving regional food, markets and wine tastings. Wild swim in the lake at Varennes, which also has a sandy beach. If you want to go fishing the owners can help with rods, permits, a guide and also a picnic.

Local points of interest from Sarah Carlisle & Lewis Lyle

  • A few km's to the south of us are the lovely villages and towns situated along the banks of the River Loir; La Chartre-sur-Loir for example. Wine tasting, brocantes and vide-greniers most weekends (or the keen Treasure Hunters )
  • Only 12km away are the lakes at Marcon, with a sand beach, slide & lifeguard, great swimming & water sports, plus a small park for the kids. Ideal for families with young kids. The Bugatti circuit is close by in Le Mans, to drive on the Mulsanne straight!
  • The forest of Bercé is an ideal place for walking, horse-riding, cycling and mountain biking (315 km of waymarked itineraries). A dappled network of trails...Mushroom picking tours arranged in season, that combines a day foraging and a day cooking!
  • It's well worth visiting the bio wine producers of the Maison Rouge, a favourite amongst many local wine producers - although there are lots to recommend - Croisard, (house special) Freseneau & Gigou..Wine & Cheese tours can be arranged.
  • The Loir and surrounding tributaries offer beautiful fishing & kayaking locations, we can tailor packages and an experienced guide. including permits, rods & equipment and the perfect picnic ....as well as hopefully BBQing the catch of the day.
  • There is the local market on a Wednesday - that sell the most amazing unpasturised organic goats cheese, i use organic & local products whenever possible for Table d'hôtes ( Le Chaton Rouge is a now fully liscenced restaurant establishment)

Introducing

Sarah Carlisle & Lewis Lyle

Sarah (an interior designer) and Lewis (a chef, fisherman and hunter) are passionate foodies and foragers. They're keen to organise foraging trips for guests and then to demonstrate how to turn what you find into part of a nutritious meal. They called the B&B after a cat they once had with the same name, they now have a new cat called Luna.
