The Experience

You’re high on a hill with spectacular views over the city of La Spezia, then on over the vast blue expanse of the Gulf of Poets. The well-tended gardens include maritime pine and there is a terraced olive garden – spending time outdoors will be a joy and there are plenty of covered spaces to sit and eat, or relax on comfortable sofas and chairs, even if it rains.

Indoors is equally delightful – tall, arched windows adorn three sides of the first floor so light pours in. The main living room is filled with treasures from all over Europe and some pieces date back to the 1700s – the feel is elegant and serene and you can eat indoors with a sea view. The big kitchen is tip-top, gorgeous to work in (although you can order a chef if you prefer) and with wonderful views.

Sleep in peaceful, roomy bedrooms, wake to breakfast on the terrace and a lazy day by the pool, slide into the water when you need to cool off, or wander the gardens.

Reviews

Villa Spenser triggers my creative spirit. I'd nestle into a comfy chair and pen poetry, drink a spritz and maybe take a pause for a swim, then shuffle into the kitchen to see if I could make myself useful and get involved in prepping a banquet to be served under the stars whilst imbibing the gentle sea breeze, thinking expansive thoughts and humming to myself 'What a Wonderful World'!

Location

The neighbourhood

Walk out of the door and you're straight onto a walking trail which connects to the famous Cinque Terre paths – walk from village to village – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You're walking distance from some good restaurants too, including the famous La Gira. La Spezia is a colourful city with a vibrant cultural scene and delicious local food – the home of pesto. Take boat trips, find beaches.

Local points of interest from Laurent

  • A peaceful base between sea and hills. Stay at Villa Spenser, a tranquil hillside retreat above La Spezia-ideal for exploring the Cinque Terre, Golfo dei Poeti, and the beauty of northern Tuscany.
  • Local life is close at hand. Walk a few minutes to cafés, trattorie and small shops. Enjoy fresh focaccia in the morning or an evening aperitivo as lights twinkle across the bay.
  • Walk the ancient Via Sant’Anna from the villa gate, join the historic stone path through chestnut woods towards Riomaggiore, or Porto Venere - a scenic route for walkers and dreamers.
  • Gateway to the Cinque Terre - Only 2 km from La Spezia. Trains, boats and trails connect you to the UNESCO-listed Cinque Terre, its terraced hills and breathtaking sea views.
  • A coastline of poets. Explore the Golfo dei Poeti, beloved by Byron and Shelley, with its secret coves, colourful harbours and timeless Mediterranean charm.
  • Moments to slow down. Unwind on the terrace with a glass of local Vermentino, listen to cicadas in the pines, and watch the sunset paint the sea - pure Ligurian serenity.
