The Experience

Pick artichokes from the garden, apricots from the trees… and sit down for lunch facing the stunning Marchian hills.

Arrive to two houses facing different directions: the old stone farmhouse restored for the owners, and the large luminous barn. Inside: bedrooms with terraces upstairs and down, an open kitchen that’s thrilling for chefs, Asian art on immaculate walls, a vast sofa, logs for winter, and every desirable digital thing. Outside are mountain bikes, a pizza oven and a saltwater pool.

Stride up the hill to medieval Montottone, for organic pizza at La Rosita, and a vast panorama. For walks, head for the peaks of Sibillini; for crystal-clear waters, the beaches of Portonovo. Marche is a food lover’s delight: find cheeses in Belmonte, porchetta in Monte Vidon Combatte, and unique wines at Monsampietro Morico. Recover with yoga in your yoga space… slip into the glassy pool.

Reviews

I stayed at Villa Rivo with a large group this past summer. We had a wonderful time there! To begin with, the house we stayed in was beautifully laid out and had everything that we needed. The bedrooms are spacious, with nice beds and very responsive air conditioning (it was extremely hot while we were there so the air conditioning was key). Every window in the place has a different view and they are all interesting and picturesque, exactly what you would think of as classic Italian countryside. In short we had a wonderful stay at Villa Rivo and we will definitely be going back.

James, Toronto

This area of the Marche is full of local wonders to explore in the immediate countryside and down on the Adriatic coast 30 minutes away, yet pampered guests will find it difficult to tear oneself away from the mesmerizing and calming views from every angle of the contemporary residence. Take walks to the nearby village, bike even further, and gain a real sense of living slow and authentically.

Location

The neighbourhood

Apart from the odd tractor, an utterly peaceful spot - yet only 5 minutes (3km) from Montottone. This charming hilltop village is home to a supermarket, small shops, two restaurants, and Bottega Bozzi Ceramics (est. 1851). Discover ancient villages: hike and bike in the hills. For more restaurant choices, visit hilltop Fermo (16km) with its fine palazzi, tourist-free piazza, and handy station.

Local points of interest from Rossana Colombo

  • Da Sebastiani: Located a short drive away in the charming village of Ortezzana this newly opened restaurant by young chef Carlo Sebbastiani is making waves. Just listed in the new Gambero Rosso 2022 guide. A gem.
  • Vicolocielo - This newly opened burger bar is a welcome addition to the charming village of Monteleone. Head there in the afternoons and be rewarded with stunning views and sunsets over the Sibillini Mountains.
  • Enoteca Arbei: This charming enoteca in the center of the village of Montottone with locally made liqueurs and a selection of the finest food from Le Marche and beyond. Visit for cocktails and "degustazione diffuso" in tables placed around the village.
  • Risorgimarche: This music festival was created to help rejuvenate the region culturally and is spread over towns and villages througout the summer while the big event is held an 8KM hike up to a high mountain plain. A unique exprerience.
  • Tennis: For the tennis lovers out there our neck of Le Marche is a real gem. Each village seems to have a communal court set in a breathtaking location that will have you losing track of the balls. We can help get the keys from the local town halls.
  • Located 20 minutes away from the house lie the Roman ruins of "Falerio Picenus" in the modern town town of Falerone. The ruins have been lovingly excated and the amphitheatre sometimes hosts concerts. One of many incredible historical sights to be visited.

Introducing

Rossana Colombo

After "the better part of 20 years" living in Shanghai, your hosts (Henri a Canadian architect, Rosanna an Italian yoga teacher cum chef) came home to Montottone in 2019, "so happy to call Villa Rivo home." They offer everything to their guests, from cookery classes, picnics and in-house chefs, to dazzling white linen and organic soaps. When travelling, an English speaking assistant takes over.
