The Experience

Start the day with breakfast as late as you like (within reason): eggs from the hens, tomatoes from the garden, and homemade breads and jams. End the day in a deckchair listening to the birds, with a crisp glass of local wine.

This attractive eco re-build is shared with your hosts and two handsome moggies. Mike is mad about cycling, Kelda adores cooking, and they are as self-sustainable as can be. There’s a big friendly table for seasonal dinners, an outdoor oven for homemade pizzas, and bedrooms with rolling Marche views. Visit the evening flea market in Fermo. Hike and bike in the sublime Sibillini park; Mike will happily guide you.

Wherever you are, there’ll be a food ‘sagra’ nearby – perhaps in Sant’Angelo in Pontano. This small historic town, five minutes up the hill, has a good little restaurant with an amazing view. Head for the terrace of Diulia.

Reviews

Kelda and Mike couldn't be more welcoming and their home more peaceful. They are a mine of information about anything to do with local food, and wine, the best cycle rides, walks and will spoil you on your return with a wonderful home-cooked meal. Perfect.

Casale Volpe is a beautiful country retreat just outside a local town with an enjoyable laid back essence & friendly locals. Our b&b room was a generous size with windows opening to morning sunrise & bird calls. Breakfasts were a real treat, fresh fruit, homemade granola, yoghurt & preserves, all served with fabulous countryside views. Kelda & Mike were such enjoyable fun & excellent hosts, sharing recommendations for coffees, pastries & dinners. We joined them for a few memorable aperitif & local dining experiences. Kelda’s culinary skill set is immense, we highly recommend her cooking class.

Robert, Milton Keynes

We arrived at Casale Volpe on the 24th of May and stayed for two nights. The narrow road that led down to the property initially made us feel a bit unsure, but it was worth it. Our room was spacious and the bathroom with its walk-in shower was perfect and beautifully presented. The views around the property were stunning, and we found ourselves just relaxing in the sunshine after breakfast, taking in the fresh air and scenery. Kelda and Mike went above and beyond to make our short stay memorable. We truly loved your home and your company at Casale Volpe. Thank you and stay well.

Steve, Toronto

This was our third stay with Kelda and Mike and it was as good or better than before - lots of laughs, amazing meals and a few treats too! If you like good design you will love the rooms in the fully reconstructed stone building - I could examine the details all day - and if you like a long lazy day by the salt water pool you can do that too. Forget about television or golf courses, this is the real country.

Bernard, Bury St Edmunds

Second time we have stayed with Kelda & Mike, even better, had such a wonderful time and both had a very relaxing time. They are extremely welcoming and you feel at home straight away. The room is very well prepared for your arrival both Kelda & Mike welcome you into their home. It is clear they have created something special that they would expect when visiting somewhere and ensure your every need is met. If you want peace and quiet they will leave you alone to enjoy the place, but if you fancy a good chat then you know you will have fantastic conversations over dinner.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house lies at the bottom of a winding lane, surrounded by woods, fields, wildlife and views. Keen cyclists can hire bikes - make the most of Mike's knowledge. If you love wine, they book tastings for you; Fattoria Dezi at Servigliano (12km) is the nearest. 5km up the hill, in Sant'Angelo in Pontano, are shops and two bars with wine and beer on tap. Discover lovely local food at Ristorante La Torre.

Local points of interest from Mike Curtis & Kelda Wallis

  • We are a 40 minute drive from the mountains and a 45 minute drive from the coast, which means two holidays for the price of one. Swim in the Adriatic and eat seafood on the beach, then swim in a lake in the mountains and eat local cheese and prosciutto.
  • You're a stunning 40 minute drive to Lago Fiastra, with its acqua blue fresh water, perfect for swimming, renting a canoe or pedalo. Cool off in the clear mountain water before heading to the pizzeria for lunch, just a few short steps away.
  • Spend a day wine tasting in some of the local, family-run vineyards, all within a short 30 minute drive. At a fraction of the price of some of the better known wine regions, you're likely to discover your new favourite tipple.
  • In the surrounding villages, there are literally hundreds of food festivals, or sagre throughout summer and autumn. It's the perfect opportunity to get a sense of village life here, whilst dancing with the locals and celebrating some of their best dishes.
  • Spend a few days walking or hiking in the fabulous Sibillini National Park. Lago di Pilato, Foce di Montemonaco, Gola dell'Infernaccio and Lame Rosse are walks that all start around a 30-60 minutes' drive away. We can even pack you off with a picnic.
  • The Sferisterio in Macerata, a medieval hilltop town 35 minutes' drive away is a wonderful neoclassical open-air opera house and home of the Macerata Opera Festival, which takes place throughout July and August.

Introducing

Mike Curtis & Kelda Wallis

The owners planned to move to the south of France, but fell in love with Marche instead. They have happily relocated, along with cats Ernie and Herbert. They love this farmhouse with its vegetable garden and nine acres of land, and could not be more welcoming.
