The Experience

Here, in the oldest wine area in the world, is a low, handsome 1800s winery – views to Etna on one side, the sea on the other -surrounded by a young garden of olive and wild almond trees: enjoy homemade jams at breakfast (fig, tangerine, orange), aubergine parmigiana at dinner (creamy, delicious) and beautiful wine; the family’s wines are spicy, citrusy, organic and sold by Ottolenghi.

12 peaceful bedrooms are spread across the farmhouse and annexe, mostly on the ground floor. Stroll the organic gardens which produce a bounty of vegetables, flowers, nuts and fruit, unwind by the tranquil pool, seek shade under carob or mulberry. The atmosphere is calm and soporific.

Visit the baroque town of Vittoria, set off for the sea, or just stay put. You can have superb suppers in the garden, by the pool, or at a social table in the ancient Palmento. Book a cookery class and learn traditional skills. This is a very special place to stay.

Reviews

This favourite relais of many happy guests is the result of Fausta's inexhaustible energy and attention to detail. Harmonious interiors, where simplicity and exquisite taste commune with the natural surrounding vegetation, are the key elements of the authentic and relaxing ambience. A unique opportunity to delve into local country life and explore the rich history of the area.

Nicole, Sawday's Inspector

Another great recommendation from Alistair Sawday! Despite the unusually cool and damp weather in May we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Baglio Occhipinti. The welcome was good, the rooms were comfortable, the staff were all cheerful and helpful. The cold stopped us from dining outdoors in the garden but a log fire was lit in the lovely lounge (previously part of the winery) and it was a pleasure to dine there. The food was fantastic and the wines were exciting! Sadly too cool for the lovely pool but we treated ourselves to very good in room massages!

Judith, Bridport

Wonderful food, wine, hospitality and the chance to meet like-minded, interesting guests. Fausta and her family have created a beautifully designed, yet relaxing environment. There are lots of sites and beaches to visit within easy driving distance. This is high on my list for a return visit. Thank you

Sally, Bristol

In this quiet, rural location in south-east Sicily, Fausta Ochhipinti has created a relaxing and peaceful setting for her guests. The main part of the traditional stone house, once a working winery, offers a stylish and comfortable place to idle away an hour with a glass of regional wine before Fausta serves dinner, a social and communal event beneath the stars and olive trees! Food is prepared lovingly from family recipes, with organic vegetables sourced directly from Fausta's garden. Leaving Bagglio Occhipinti was difficult - almost like leaving a dear friend! - but one can always return!

Location

The neighbourhood

The farm is immersed in the Noto Valley and the vineyards run right up to the cluster of buildings so there are plenty of lovely walks, and in the evenings you will be accompanied by the sound of the crickets. You're just fifteen minutes by car from Vittoria where you'll find Piazza del Popolo, with the beautiful church Santa Maria delle Grazie. The Baroque cities of Ragusa and Modica are near.

Local points of interest from Fausta Occhipinti

  • We are in the middle of the oldest wine road in the world! Enjoy a wine tasting tour around the vineyards of the most authentic natural wine producer of the region like Azienda Agricola Occhipinti, Cos, Antica Tenuta del Nanfro. Ideal for wine lovers!
  • Baglio Occhipinti is in the middle of the six UNESCO heritage sites in Sicily: Villa Romana del Casale, the late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto (Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Scicli, Caltagirone, Palazzolo, Noto, Catania), Agrigento, Syracuse and Pantalica.
  • Have a romantic walk in Puntasecca, the charming fisherman village that features in the Inspector Montalbano novels. 20 minute drive.
  • The fish market in Scoglitti, with its explosion of colors, smells and sounds, takes place every day at 11 in the morning and 4 in the evening, and its only a 15 minute drive away.
  • Everything handmade is our passion! Let's have a tour of the kitchen garden together and prepare a meal based on authentic family recipes, or make natural soap with our organic olive oil.

Introducing

Fausta Occhipinti

The family have noble Sicilian origins. Bruno and Rosaura have divided their vast property between their two very capable daughters. Arianna who oversees the wonderful biodiverse wine production and Fausta, a landscape architect who runs the hotel, restaurant and surrounding farm with considerable charm. They are supported by enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff.
