The Experience
Birdwatch by day, stargaze by night, chase fireflies. This is for those in search of solitude: no phone lines, just rolling vistas onto Tuscan hills and a one-bar hamlet down the road. Once a rustic dwelling for five farming families (people upstairs, animals down), this 18th-century ‘casa colonica’ is elegant and rich in personal detail. It was inherited by English owners 20 years ago and sleeps eight in huge comfort, its rooms radiating around two deep south-facing loggias decorated with mirrors to extend the views. Downstairs is the open plan, country-cosy living/dining/kitchen space, and an en suite bedroom alongside. Upstairs is the sitting room, lofty and large, where upholstered reading chairs and squishy sofas rub shoulders with antiques, art, books and family photos. Bedrooms have good mattresses, generous bathrooms, handsome rugs, and all feels warm and inviting, like the home of a favourite aunt. Outside: roses, herbs, hammocks slung between trees, a small vineyard, a saline infinity pool, and table tennis. Paint, write, rest, relax, retreat… no need to do more.

I've just spent a wonderful relaxing week in this lovely house. The birdsong is amazing and I loved hearing the nightingale on my way to bed. The house itself is really spacious with plenty of options for eating outside and relaxing in the sun. The pool is amazing and again it's great to watch the birds sweeping down in the evening. I loved it.

We have spent several holidays in this idyllic house. In a charming and peaceful location, it is easily accessible to the local village with all its amenities. Surrounded by terraces and lovely gardens with a wonderful infinity pool, the views are stunning at any time of day. A much loved family home, now updated with every comfort. The perfect place to unwind with a glass of wine watching the unforgettable sunsets - we are already planning another visit....

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Claire Swann
- This is the heart of the Valdarno &the area is known for Le Balze, extraordinary tower like cliffs soaring into the sky. These feature in Leonardo's Mona Lisa and there are good marked walks around them.
- There are good markets for both food and clothes in Loro Ciuffenna on Mon, Montevarchi on Thur, Terranuova on Fri and San Giovanni on Sat. It's really worth shopping in the markets, everything is so fresh & mostly local. Stall holders always helpful.
- The beautiful ancient church of Gropina with Etruscan and Roman origins is at Loro Ciuffenna 15 mins away. Loro is a charming hillside town cut through by a deep and dramatic gorge.
- There are plenty of nearby restaurants to choose from. They vary from the sophisticated & English speaking to the simple & rustic serving genuine Tuscan food, always locally sourced.
- The farmers in the valley will sell you their homemade pecorino and ricotta cheeses made from the milk of the sheep that graze around the house. The sheep are usually accompanied by a few white egrets.
- You may be woken by Golden Orioles singing in the valley and serenaded by nightingales as soon as the sun sets. Listen out for nightjars too and then go on porcupine quill hunts in the fields around the house.

We rented Casa Zia for my daughter's 30th birthday and we have had a magical week. The house is incredibly special, much loved and blissfully isolated and peaceful. The house is full of lovely old Italian furniture and is in stark contrast to the new, beautifully designed swimming pool. We loved the bird song and the garden was full of fireflies at night. Lying on the grass in pitch darkness looking for shooting stars was heaven. There were lots of pretty bowls and platters for the fruit, vegetables & fresh pecorino cheese found in the local markets. Perfect.
