The Experience

The main house is vast, with terracotta floors, fine rugs, a huge working fireplace, deep and sumptuous sofas, a wonderful collection of 18th-century French antiques, a great sound system and a well-hidden TV for rainy days – it’s a hugely convivial space to spend time in. For longer stays there is daily bed-making and room cleaning, a chef for your dinner on the first night, everything pristine, and yet you have complete independence.

The gardens are superb: terraces span around the house with views to two castles and the Apennine mountains; pots of geraniums and lemons scent the air, you can pick fresh herbs and tomatoes in season and experiment with the wood-fired pizza oven, or simply float in the shimmering pool. Cook up a storm in the immense kitchen with all the kit you might want and a wooden refectory table.

Bedrooms (three in the house and two in a separate building) are havens of comfort and character.

Reviews

I am stepping into a living painting that covers half a millennium of history. I sit down indoors and my senses imbibe the atmosphere of comfort, permanence and humility. It feels like an honour to be in such surroundings. A sense of gratitude for life itself and all its wonders and creativity comes over me. I step out into the garden, take in the view near and far and say yes, thank you.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's grand countryside, with plenty of good walking trails, but not too remote. There are some excellent restaurants nearby – Batibecco is a five-minute drive, Il Caminetto in Strada and a pizzeria are both 3km – and wine tasting in the numerous Chianti Classico wine estates. Montefioralle is an idyllic hilltop village and there are regular food markets in Strada and Greve.

Local points of interest from Jody Turkus

  • La Valle is right in the middle of Chianti, with many world-famous wineries within 15-20 minutes' drive – some of the best include Antinori, Fonterutoli, Verrazzano, and Gabbiano.
  • Tuscan hiking trails start right from the front door, and this is one of the most beautiful regions to cycle too. Walk 15 minutes along a trail from the house to a waterfall, with a natural pool for wild swimming or a cold plunge.
  • Every village nearby holds a weekly market - pick up fresh local produce in the nearest village, Strada in Chianti (5-min drive) on a Tuesday. For a bigger market head to Greve in Chianti on a Saturday morning; Imprunetta is either Thursday or Saturday.
  • With a bit of notice, we can arrange for one of our chefs to provide cooking classes or pizza-making classes using the wood-fired pizza oven at La Valle. Eat out under the pergola, surrounded by grape vines, with unforgettable views to two castles.
  • Recommended restaurants nearby include La Castellana (15-min drive) in Montefiorelle, one of the most beautiful places you'll ever see. Lamole, one of the best restaurants in Tuscany, is 30 mins.
