The Experience

A well-hidden treasure in the Tuscan countryside that sociable folk will be delighted to discover. A stone-built terrace of apartments looks across the river Orcia to Monte Amiata, surrounded by olive groves – a deeply rural scene. These once dilapidated farmhouse buildings have been rescued and revived with Italian vitality, so you can gather together and relax on the terrace or by the pool, and then retreat to the privacy of your apartment. Some sleep four, some two, all are spacious and simply dressed: wooden beams, white walls, elegant fabrics. Two have vaulted ceilings, all have contemporary bathrooms and kitchens. The owners visited on a whim ten years ago and fell in love with the tranquillity – now they delight in sharing it all, and offer several courses to guests. Yoga groups can spread out on the veranda, there are courses for budding photographers, and Alexander organises wine tasting trips too; massage, aromatherapy and art courses are in the offing. There’s something for everyone here, all delivered with warmth and humour from two generations of the charming McCrackens.

Reviews

We walked through the garage and down to the terrace and immediately fell in love with the place. It sits on a hill, overlooking picture perfect Tuscan landscape, a gorgeous pool, and all the comforts needed for a 3 day break. Angela is a perfect hostess - always happy to help with any tips. The apartment we had was enormous and had everything we needed. The bathroom was gorgeous - large , well spaced out and a little window from the shower out to the Tuscan view. The house is close to some great restaurants and beautiful places to visit. We will definitely be back

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Alexander McCracken

  • Il Giardino di Daniel Spoerri, Seggiano. A magical mix of contemporary sculpture fused with the beautiful natural surroundings.
  • The many local festivals are always worth a visit: wine, music, food and everything else in between. Further afield, the bright lights and attractions of Siena, Florence and Rome are all within easy reach by road or rail.
  • A short hop from Montalcino and its world famous Brunello wine is the 11th century Romanesque St. Antimo Abbey complete with Gregorian chanting monks!
  • The nearby coast has something to offer everyone, there is the well-heeled refinement of Castiglione della Pescaia, or the more rugged and wild Maremma national park.
  • Monte Amiata dominates the local skyline and is home to many a good walk, as well as being the source of the numerous natural hot springs, such as Saturnia, to relax in afterwards.
  • Residential/one day workshops in photoshop & photography, pilates and yoga.
