The Experience

This medieval stone palazzo in its tiny, remote, hilltop village has a wonderful serenity; nothing jars. Soft, warm colours blend with natural stone, wood and terracotta. Views are of red rooftops and wooded mountains, beds are gently canopied, bathrooms are simple and spotless. There’s a fine upstairs loggia, a library and collection of local maps and photos.

Take breakfast on the terrace: fresh pane di patate made in the village, focaccia, cake, ricotta, pecorino with fruit and homemade jams and marmalades. In summer you can stroll to a local trattoria and eat well, or head for thermally endowed Bagni di Lucca, a half-hour drive. The Garfagnana region is a joy to explore – on foot, by bike – and at the edge of Tereglio, the lavender slope is intoxicating in bloom.

Return to sit on the simple terrace, admiring the views, perhaps with a book and a glass of the local wine. This is well away from the tourist trail.

Reviews

Thank you Giovanna for your wonderful hospitality and sharing your stories!

Mark, Houston

This beautiful and original house is mesmerising! And the mountains that surround it complete the place. A wonderful place to celebrate my birthday!

Edoardo, Milan

I can only reiterate what earlier reviewers have said. This is a lovely place to stay and I only wish we'd stayed more than the last night of our holiday. Tereglio itself is stunning - one long street on a ridge - but the warmth of Giovana's welcome and the care she took of us, even though we were just passing through, was the highlight. The house is beautifully and stylishly renovated and the breakfast is expansive and largely locally sourced. One of the most characterful places we've stayed in and astonishing value for money.

We had the happiest stay at La Faggiana. This village house is beautiful, our bedroom very comfortable and the views from the pretty terrace glorious. Every care is taken - from the warmth of Giovanna's greeting to the most delicious breakfast of local delicacies. Giovanna could not have been kinder. We cannot wait to return to this lovely idyll and could not possibly recommended it more.

Rebecca, London

A truly magical place, beautifully renovated and steeped in character. The hosts, Massimo and Giovanna, were so lovely and welcoming, and the room was very comfortable and immaculately clean. Breakfast was a truly delicious feast of local and home made treats (focaccia, cakes, jams and cheeses) on a terrace with breathtaking views. Terreglio itself is a gorgeous, sleepy town, and well worth the climb to get to. Highly recommend this for a weekend in Tuscany and hope to come back soon.

A truly wonderful location which is enhanced by the hospitality of Giovanna and Massimo. Highly recommend and plan to return in the Autumn. The building has been tastefully restored and the library and reading room provide a cool space to unwind from walks in the surrounding hills. Natalia, who runs the village store, and her husband, Maro, the local baker, provided excellent candlelit dinners upon request. These were served on the terrace or in the dining room.

Wanting to change scenery for a few days, we chose the Garfagnana valley, the ancient village of Tereglio and La Fagiana. Couldn't have chosen better! Giovanna made us feel like part of her home, the room was cozy and had a large terrace with terrific views, breakfast served on a tiny terrace overlooking a deep forested valley couldn't have been tastier: fresh schiacciata and local Buccellato from the village baker, fresh ricotta from the village. Tereglio is full of history, endless walks, stunning views over the peaks. Just perfect. We are going back in October to see the Autumn colours!

Heidi, Vicchio, Florence

Tereglio was gorgeous and so inviting. Giovanna is the perfect host for the most peaceful Bed and Breakfast imaginable and she was always easy to reach if needed. The views are breathtaking and her breakfast as well as the country restaurant are magnificent. Walking into the lavender filled home and sitting on the back patio drinking local wines made for the most relaxing adventure in Italy. I wouldn't hesitate to return to such a beautiful town with such beautiful people. La Fagiana is truly a hidden gem and I would encourage anyone to visit.

Stunningly beautiful location in the centre of the Garfagnana, with endless walking from the village. The breakfasts are to die for, and the welcome could not be warmer. A real jewel of a find.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in a medieval mountain village with music festivals during the summer months. Da Elena trattoria in the village does wonderful pasta, soup and pizzas – you can eat outside but need to book in advance. Head to Rifugio Casentini for the start of walking trails into the mountains – you can get lunch and snacks there for the day. Visit the hot springs and spa at Bagni di Lucca, 30 mins.

Local points of interest from Giovanna Niccoli

  • Tereglio is a beautifiul and ancient village, surrounded by the Tuscan Appenine hills, and the Aouan AlpsIt is a special place for any who love walking excursions and car trips to the various nearby towns and churches, Barga, Lucca etc.
  • The village is perfect for any who are seeking peace and quiet, even if during certain weeks of the year it plays host to music courses and concerts. There is a general store selling home-made bread, pastries, and local produce.
  • One can eat locally in an inexpensive family-run trattoria, offering home made pasta and home-grown produce. A wonderful place to dine alfresco, and play bocce (boules).

Introducing

Giovanna Niccoli

Giovanna and her late husband Massimo used to live on the outskirts of Lucca but it became too busy for them. One day they came across this village and discovered one of the oldest houses was for sale – and threatened with demolition to become a car park. They bought it and saved it. Giovanna is from a long line of hoteliers so it made sense to run a B&B and share the house with others.
