The Experience

Everything about La Rosa e Il Leone, from the ancient Roman columns in the flower-filled garden to the Juliet-style balcony of the marble-floored master bedroom, breathes feeling and romance. Named after Valeria’s Veronese father and Milanese mother – the Rose of Lombardy, the Lion of the Veneto – the villa is an ode to their love both for each other and for the arts. The walls sing with framed musical scores and programmes from nights at La Scala (Milan) and L’Arena (Verona), while adjoining first-floor sitting rooms celebrate the juxtaposition of the masculine (hard lines, dark colours, stacks of leather-bound books) and the feminine (curves, pastel colours, a passion for music and dance). The soft hand-woven sheets on antique-framed beds were part of Valeria’s mother’s dowry, the furniture part of her parents’ lifetime collection. Stroll under leafy pergolas; listen to the history humming in the ancient cypresses; breakfast outside and admire an extraordinary replica of the Louvre’s Winged Victory. Like her house, Valeria is a gold-mine of high culture. A must for anyone visiting Verona.

Our family had a great stay for one week in this spectacular house with a wonderfully enchanting garden. We were enjoying every day and we still - after arriving home - cannot forget how much we enjoyed our stay. Thank you so much to Valeria and Maura.

An absolute gem of a place. From waking up with a view of the Alps from your bedroom window, to breakfasting in the garden under the wisteria to walking around the estate with the blooming flowers and lovely moss and perfect statuary you'll be transported to a different, peaceful era where time is measured in sweet memories.

Laura, Newton, MA

To spend a few days surrounded by the beauty, history, and warmth at Valeria's house is pure delight. Imagine waking up to birdsong and the scent of wisteria, opening your shutters to a view of vineyards and the distant snowy Alps, then wandering down to a beautifully-laid breakfast in a lush and romantic garden. The area is full of interesting villages, wineries, and off-the-beaten-path attractions, and also close to Verona, Mantova, and other fascinating cities. But the elegant, enormous house and garden are so beguiling that you may not want to leave.

My husband and I had the great fortune of staying at La Rosa e Il Leone in September of 2018. This place is pure magic. The villa was gorgeous and the gardens were felt like a "secret garden". Valaria, Maura, and Giovanna are gracious hosts, who were attentive and provided wonderful recommendations for dinners and sights in the surrounding area. We cannot recommend this place highly enough. Words do not do it justice. Do yourself a favour and make a reservation.

Simply the most special place we have ever stayed. The garden is exquisite - wisteria tumbling over stone walls, beautiful sculptures, pots of lemon and orange trees scenting the doorway. There are lovely, spacious bedrooms (with those incredible sheets) and lots of comfortable spots in the house to relax. Incredible attention to detail, with fresh flowers in every room, fires laid in the fireplaces, and fruit, wine and coffee in the kitchen. But the very best part is the warm, caring and fun presence of Valeria, Maura and Giovanna. Our whole family fell in love and we can't wait to go back.
