The Experience
The crenellated tower is visible as you wind along the cobbled track into this ancient hilltop village, perched high with mountain views. Levada is really a small castle in a settlement built of moss-covered granite blocks.
Luis and Maria, she a retired English teacher, are caring hosts with a lively sense of humour. Breakfast around the big table on eggs, cured meats and cheeses – if you’re hungry later you can request a traditional slow-cooked roast in the bread oven. The food’s delicious and wine and conversation guaranteed to flow.
Bedrooms have wooden ceilings, beams and sisal floors; the Tower Room has a balcony; the bathroom of the Poet’s Room is reached via a trapdoor in the floor! The sitting room is more than comfortable and made for slouching. Find a trampoline, a small pool and a river beach here, and beautiful waterfalls nearby. Up the hill, past the water mills, is a hilltop with great boulders and dolmens.

This recent visit is my 9 th to Casa da Levada. I have been bringing artists to photograph and paint for many years as Plein Air Portugal participants love the home, the village, location, food and especially the Hosts, Maria and Luis Mota. This posada is an artists perfect place from which to create.

Location
The neighbourhood
The village of Travanca do Monte is picture-postcard rural Portugal. Unique with its ‘espigueiros’ - stone granaries typical of the region and a fantastic insight into an ancient way of life. Wander and stock up on supplies at its one shop. More variety can be found in a 25-minute drive in Amarante. Head to road N101 when hunger calls - there are lots of restaurants serving traditional fare.
Local points of interest from Luis & Maria Vasconcelos do Lago Mota
- Casa Levada is prone to artists. Lately it has been housing Plein Air Painting and Photograph Workshops in the Summer
- Casa da Levada is the family for more than 300 years
- In the village there is one only shop where you can find everything from farming tools to food items
- You're a 20-minute walk from the ancient roman monument , a very complete Dolmen. Explore the mountain and appretiate the womderful view around you.
- Amarante is 15km away and there you can taste delicious and varied local food and all sort of wonderful wines.

Introducing
Luis & Maria Vasconcelos do Lago Mota
Maria and Luis welcome you with open arms and big old smiles - they’ve been looking after folk here for decades and you can tell they love it. Luis’s family has been here for 300 years - he’s more than happy to tell you about the renovations on the property and which of his ancestors completed them! They’ll greet you on arrival and talk you through hikes and adventures to be had in the area.
Enjoyed a fabulous 5 night stay at Casa Levada with another couple. Maria and Luis's hospitality and delicious meals were matched by the rustic village location and atmospheric stone buildings. Perched high on the mountainside with expansive views, Casa Levada was the perfect getaway from the hectic big cities of Lisbon and Porto.
