The Experience

The crenellated tower is visible as you wind along the cobbled track into this ancient hilltop village, perched high with mountain views. Levada is really a small castle in a settlement built of moss-covered granite blocks.

Luis and Maria, she a retired English teacher, are caring hosts with a lively sense of humour. Breakfast around the big table on eggs, cured meats and cheeses – if you’re hungry later you can request a traditional slow-cooked roast in the bread oven. The food’s delicious and wine and conversation guaranteed to flow.

Bedrooms have wooden ceilings, beams and sisal floors; the Tower Room has a balcony; the bathroom of the Poet’s Room is reached via a trapdoor in the floor! The sitting room is more than comfortable and made for slouching. Find a trampoline, a small pool and a river beach here, and beautiful waterfalls nearby. Up the hill, past the water mills, is a hilltop with great boulders and dolmens.

Reviews

The ancient granite walls, the vaulted wooden ceilings and the antique furnitures and paintings dominate the interior of Casa da Levada. You will feel that you have magically travelled back in time. The wonderful outdoor area, "espigueiros" and garden will enchant you with their views surrounded by the mountains at the heart of the beautiful and picturesque hamlet of Travanca do Monte.

Dale

Casa da Levada holds charm, history, hospitality and panoramic views in a warm embrace. Maria and Luis are people people; friendly, knowledgeable and discrete. Their home becomes your center of gravity while visiting Northern Portugal. As an artist who stays annually at the 'Casa' this is my favorite and special place to paint or photograph. Go and be charmed.

Rosamond

Welcoming, comfortable, every detail covered, lovely food, warm and memorable hospitality. Luis gave us wonderful background to the area and the traditions. A lovely area and well worth exploring.

Dale

Much to be enthusiastic about and why I have come back 4 times: the Hosts, the home, the hamlet, the charm of the rugged vast scenery, the warmth of Maria and Luis, the hard working and friendly citizens of Travanca...all add to making this place a favorite place to paint and photograph landscape.

Location

The neighbourhood

The village of Travanca do Monte is picture-postcard rural Portugal. Unique with its ‘espigueiros’ - stone granaries typical of the region and a fantastic insight into an ancient way of life. Wander and stock up on supplies at its one shop. More variety can be found in a 25-minute drive in Amarante. Head to road N101 when hunger calls - there are lots of restaurants serving traditional fare.
