The Experience
In the wild hills of coastal Alentejo, this is a solar-powered sanctuary where cork oak trees line the paths and the star-filled night skies will amaze you.
Three calm, light-filled suites, each with huge windows framing sweeping views across the valley, have hand-woven traditional Alentejo woollen headboards, luxurious twin or double beds (with handmade mattresses), crisp Portuguese linens, en suite shower rooms and private verandas, perfect for slow mornings or quiet evenings with a glass of wine.
Breakfasts, which can be taken in your room or in the clubhouse, are generous and locally sourced: soft goat’s cheese, local honey, homemade marmalades, free-range eggs, local sausages, as well as a choice of Ana’s home-baked cakes.
Join a guided hike through the surrounding hills to sample the local wines, take a swim in the infinity pool and admire the view, or simply sit under the stars and soak up the silence.

Location
The neighbourhood
The nearest village is 4km away, with a market, supermarket, pharmacies, restaurants and cafés. Find surf schools and hire shops, bodyboard rental, stand-up paddle and boat tours or kayaking on the Mira river within a half hour drive.
Local points of interest from Alastair & Ana
- Vale das Estrelas offers comfort powered by the sun. Solar energy fuels the entire property, rainwater is captured and purified for drinking, and all wastewater is filtered and reused for irrigation — making sustainability seamless and elegant.
- Surrounded by rolling hills, cork oak forests, and the distant peaks of Monchique. Walk quiet trails through the valley, listen to nightingales at dusk, and fall asleep to stillness. After dark, the stars light up the skies.
- Expansive spaces, indoors and out – guests often comment that “it’s much bigger than it looks in the photos.” Each unit is unusually spacious, with high ceilings, artisan-crafted furniture, and a private terrace.
- Just 15 minutes away lies one of Europe’s last truly wild coastlines. Here, stark cliffs give way to pristine beaches, crashing surf, and the famed Fisherman’s Trail – a walking route through some of Portugal’s most awe-inspiring scenery.
- Hosts Ana and Alastair, a former diplomat and foreign correspondent, have lived across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Their warmth, stories, and deep ties to the land bring a rare kind of hospitality – attentive but never intrusive.
- Let us curate your stay: wine tastings, story pairings, massages, ceramics, guided walks, and visits to local artisans and medronho distillers. Let us know what you’re interested in – and we’ll do the rest.

Introducing
Alastair & Ana
After years travelling the world, Ana, a former Swedish diplomat, and Alastair, a former BBC correspondent, have made this wild corner of Alentejo home. They’re keen to share their love of the area (where Ana’s father comes from) and love meeting curious, adventurous travellers who want to get off the beaten track.
