The Experience

The feel is peaceful but not too remote in this drowsy hamlet where chickens range free, goats with bells on trot by and kind, unobtrusive owners next door share oil from their olive groves.

Find bright en suite bedrooms around the glass-roofed patio, three of which spill out into the lovely garden with its lawn and choice of shady and sunny places to sit/snooze/sample local mountain cheeses and hams. There are games and space galore for kids – the pool is safely gated – and the light, woody Olive Hut is a perfect retreat for yoga and ping-pong.

With shops and eateries within walking distance you can give the car a rest… or if you do drive, you can reach ancient Moorish villages easily, Granada in less than an hour or eating seafood at a beach bar in just over half.

We were a group of two families with 5 boys aged 2-10. We all had a really lovely time. The house is in a stunning position, and Sarah and Matt took so much time and made every effort to make our stay enjoyable. The house is a delight, inside and out. The gardens are an absolute pleasure (lighting especially) and the pool was used to the max by our boys (it is very reassuringly safe for little ones gated etc etc) A well appointed kitchen is a must for me, and you have everything you need here including a really good outdoor bbq. The local area is lovely and easy to explore by car.

William, Havant

We enjoyed a lovely family holiday at this charming property and comfortable holiday home. The garden has attractive seating areas, beautifully lit during the evenings, perfect for gin and tonic before dinner. We ate often at home as we had a small baby, and as avid cooks found the kitchen well equipped. Our hosts Sarah and Matt were very welcoming and could not do enough for us - from olive oil and biscuits made with their own produce, to restaurant tips, walks and activities nearby. The pool was fab, clean and a great place to lounge in the sun. We hope to return soon and recommend highly.

Almond Hill House was perfect in every way. The house and its gardens were beautiful and the layout of the home offered both great communal gathering areas and very private bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The location was quiet and secluded but also an easy drive to many fantastic sights. We did Granada and the Alhambra one day, Salobreña (a beach town) another day, and we explored Pampaneira (a village up the mountain). There was great hiking all around the house. The owners, Matt and Sarah, could not have been more gracious. This area of Spain and Almond Hill House are a true treasure.

You will get the warmest welcome of owners Sarah and Matt. The minute you set foot in the house it just feels good. Fresh flowers picked from the garden await you in the living room and in all the bedrooms. You will find a homemade bread on the kitchen counter, all proof of the thoughtfulness of the owners. Everything is there to make the most of your holidays. This is a house you'll simply love!

The neighbourhood

Captivating all year round – riding, bike hire, hiking and snowshoeing can be arranged. There are buses to the white villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira, and walks from the door: to Orgiva (2k away). Here you'll find a Thursday market, bars, shops (including a fishmonger) and recommended places to eat. A three-hour hike takes you to Lanjaron (a 12-minute drive), known for its mineral water, honey and Moorish castle ruins.

Local points of interest from Sarah & Matt

  • Rural yet near town, the property is a great base from which to explore the area. From the famous white villages (25 mins), the spa town of Lanjarón (15 mins), Granada (55 mins) or the beaches of the Costa Tropical (35 mins) there's so much to discover.
  • HOMEWORKING: suitable for home/school working for smaller groups – please ask.
  • For the more adventurous there are mountain hikes (guided or self-guided), world-class cycling, horse riding off the beaten track, and skiing in the Sierra Nevada.
  • Discover the delightful 'pueblos blancos' and stunning views from Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira with their unique Moorish past; further on, Treveléz – Spain's highest village, famous for its jamón. Visit vineyards and try the delicious wine.
  • Magical Granada is less than an hour away with its narrow streets and shady plazas; the historic Albaicín and the must-see Alhambra. We'll share our inside knowledge of great tapas bars and quirky cafes to ensure you have a great day in this amazing city.
  • Take advantage of the 'free tapa with a drink' tradition and enjoy good local restaurants – including traditional Alpujarran and authentic Moroccan dishes (many within walking distance). The nearest bar is a 10-minute walk up the lane.

Sarah & Matt

Leaving London & Dublin, Matt & Sarah followed their dreams to make this beautiful area of the Alpujarras their home, carefully renovating the former farmhouse, now Almond Hill House, and their own house next door. Matt is a keen gardener, musician and writer, Sarah enjoys printmaking; both are learning how to get the best from their olive and almond groves and from their vegetable garden. They simply love it here - their aim is that guests do too.
