The Experience

The feel is peaceful but not too remote in this drowsy hamlet where chickens range free, goats with bells on trot by and kind, unobtrusive owners next door share oil from their olive groves.

Find bright en suite bedrooms around the glass-roofed patio, three of which spill out into the lovely garden with its lawn and choice of shady and sunny places to sit/snooze/sample local mountain cheeses and hams. There are games and space galore for kids – the pool is safely gated – and the light, woody Olive Hut is a perfect retreat for yoga and ping-pong.

With shops and eateries within walking distance you can give the car a rest… or if you do drive, you can reach ancient Moorish villages easily, Granada in less than an hour or eating seafood at a beach bar in just over half.

Almond Hill House is a very special place to visit, a fabulous spacious house and garden with olive, lemon and orange groves, a pool with planty of shade. Beautiful authentic white Spanish villages in the mountains, delicious food and my favourite Tapas. Lots to do and see, we relaxed some days and explored on others. each evening ending with a glass of local wine in the garden, enjoying the peace and tranquility in this wonderful part of Spain. We will definitely visit again.

Hilary, Wicklow

We rose daily to the sound of orioles warbling musically in the valley and went to bed as owls talked to each other in the olive groves. Nothing was more quintessentially Spanish than the clong-clong of bells as the goats passed by. We nibbled wild cherries on our dramatic Pampaneira hike; and kayaked and snorkeled in clear blue coastal waters, returning to plunge into to the sparkling pool then cooking in the well equipped kitchen. We slept well on roomy, comfortable beds, cooled by high quality sheets and the old thick walls of the house. It all helped make lifetime memories for our family.

We were a group of two families with 5 boys aged 2-10. We all had a really lovely time. The house is in a stunning position, and Sarah and Matt took so much time and made every effort to make our stay enjoyable. The house is a delight, inside and out. The gardens are an absolute pleasure (lighting especially) and the pool was used to the max by our boys (it is very reassuringly safe for little ones gated etc etc) A well appointed kitchen is a must for me, and you have everything you need here including a really good outdoor bbq. The local area is lovely and easy to explore by car.

William, Havant

We enjoyed a lovely family holiday at this charming property and comfortable holiday home. The garden has attractive seating areas, beautifully lit during the evenings, perfect for gin and tonic before dinner. We ate often at home as we had a small baby, and as avid cooks found the kitchen well equipped. Our hosts Sarah and Matt were very welcoming and could not do enough for us - from olive oil and biscuits made with their own produce, to restaurant tips, walks and activities nearby. The pool was fab, clean and a great place to lounge in the sun. We hope to return soon and recommend highly.

Jo, London

Almond Hill House was perfect in every way. The house and its gardens were beautiful and the layout of the home offered both great communal gathering areas and very private bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The location was quiet and secluded but also an easy drive to many fantastic sights. We did Granada and the Alhambra one day, Salobreña (a beach town) another day, and we explored Pampaneira (a village up the mountain). There was great hiking all around the house. The owners, Matt and Sarah, could not have been more gracious. This area of Spain and Almond Hill House are a true treasure.

Erinn, Detroit

You will get the warmest welcome of owners Sarah and Matt. The minute you set foot in the house it just feels good. Fresh flowers picked from the garden await you in the living room and in all the bedrooms. You will find a homemade bread on the kitchen counter, all proof of the thoughtfulness of the owners. Everything is there to make the most of your holidays. This is a house you'll simply love!

The neighbourhood

Captivating all year round – riding, bike hire, hiking and snowshoeing can be arranged. There are buses to the white villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira, and walks from the door: to Orgiva (2k away). Here you'll find a Thursday market, bars, shops (including a fishmonger) and recommended places to eat. A three-hour hike takes you to Lanjaron (a 12-minute drive), known for its mineral water, honey and Moorish castle ruins.

Local points of interest from Sarah & Matt

  • A secluded location just five minutes from town with shops galore – fishmongers, butchers, local organic produce and well-stocked supermarkets. Historic Lanjaron is ten minutes the other way to stock up on local jamon, cheese and honey.
  • Wide choice of restaurants locally and further afield. Enjoy the Granada tradition of free tapas with all drinks.
  • Explore pretty mountain villages – some the most beautiful in Spain. Walk between them along ancient paths and gushing acequias. Further up, the highest vineyards in Europe have sweeping views across vines and almonds to the Mediterranean..
  • Join the local Granadino crowd on the Costa Tropical with its lovely beaches and chiringuitos – for long, lazy seafood lunches.
  • Magical Granada is less than an hour away with its narrow streets and shady plazas for churros or tapas; the historic Albaicín and the must-see Alhambra. We'll share our inside knowledge of great tapas bars and cafes to help you have a great day out.
  • Hire a guide for gentle hikes or climbing Spain’s highest peak or riding beautiful horses in the mountains following old Moorish mule paths. Enthusiasts will love world class cycling with professional bike hire delivery to the house possible

Sarah & Matt

Leaving London & Dublin, Matt & Sarah followed their dreams to make this beautiful area of the Alpujarras their home, carefully renovating the former farmhouse, now Almond Hill House, and their own house next door. Matt is a keen gardener, musician and writer, Sarah enjoys printmaking; both are learning how to get the best from their olive and almond groves and from their vegetable garden. They simply love it here - their aim is that guests do too.
