The Experience

Let the calm, luxurious atmosphere of this private hotel untangle any stress – the scenic coast road, the gentle wind up into the hills, and the amazing Bay view add to the idyll. French Lucie manages the Iturregi show with charm and professionalism; she and her team have time for everyone.

Just eight elegant bedrooms have sea and mountain views and great bathrooms, some open-plan; a stay in the lavish loft suite with its own balcony (there is a lift) is especially memorable. Some first-floor rooms have fabulous balconies too.

Take a glass of local wine and tapas out into the landscaped grounds, there’s a stylish pool and hammocks to ponder from… Gastronomes can book some of the Basque country’s 40 Michelin starred restaurants; Getaria has two. Walkers can stride out into the surrounding hills, equipped with maps and the best advice.

Location

The neighbourhood

A 5-minute drive from the attractive seaside town of Getaria with its water sports, including surfing, sailing and fishing, its cafés and restaurants. And 35 minutes to San Sebastian for great beachfront pintxos. Staff will arrange Txakoli vineyard tours and tastings and advise on the network of walks in the surrounding hills, including one of the Camino de Santiago routes. Ask them about local Michelin-starred restaurants like Elkano and Mina

Local points of interest from Gonzalo Pardo

  • The Camino de Norte (one of the Camino de Santiago trails) runs right past the doorstep - hike part way or the full 825km!
  • There are lots of great cycling spots in the surrounding lanes although it is hilly. Peddle around the mountains and down to the coast.
  • Getaria is a quaint seaside town which offers lots of watersports such as surfing, sailing, and fishing.
  • The food! There are many Michelin starred restaurants in the area as well as excellent vineyards.
  • Head to the interesting and unique Cristobal Balenciaga Museum dedicated to the fashion designer of the same name.
  • Drive 35 minutes to San Sebastian for great pintxos and 1 hour to Bilbaofor more pintxos and the Guggenheim.
