Airy, spacious rooms with big picture windows allow nature to be the real star of the show; original stone walls and beams, fairly minimalist furniture and a sleek vibe make sure nothing else but the great outdoors is in the limelight. Seven of the eight bedrooms have their own terraces and all have super mattresses, linen, slippers, bathrobes and air-conditioning. Bathrooms have hydro-jet corner tubs and big glass showers with bucolic views.

Breakfast on fruit from the orchard, freshly-baked breads, organic eggs, hams and Iberian cheeses; stay in for proper Basque dishes at supper – white truffles, elvers, Kokotxas and Marmitako along with grilled meats, all locally-sourced. Recover with an artisan beer on a smart sofa or wander into the garden to admire lemon, cherry, walnut, apple and peach trees.

Wine and food tours, forest bathing, massage, a Jeep nature tour in the reserve – all can be arranged with a bit of notice.
