The Experience

Off-piste drivers will delight in the approach – down a stone track, over an open field, across a ford and through grassy woodland. You land in a dreamy, bucolic setting with an arboretum and views over two deep water lakes (yes you may swim, and yes you may use a little boat) with island, waterfalls, a small summerhouse that revolves, and a stream teeming with wildlife.

A veranda and patio with table and chairs face south so you won’t miss a thing; writers, artists and those clutching a large drink may take root here on less chilly days. Your wooden cabin is comfortable and very cosy: find one fresh and airy living/dining room with a fully formed kitchen area and plenty of good seating; glass doors open out to the terrace.

The main bedroom has a giant bed with a pretty batik bedspread; the bunk room is fine for adults or children. You’re left homemade jams and usually a cake. The sky will be starry on clear nights.

Reviews

The Retreat lives up to its name being a peaceful and comfortable cabin in what feels like the middle of nowhere with just green fields, lakes, well looked after shrubs and a few ducks and geese as neighbours. Perfect venue to take a dog with countryside walks straight from the door. A lovely relaxing stay.

Nicky, Southampton

We had a lovely weekend at the lakeside retreat, the property has everything you need and the grounds are absolutely beautiful. Our dog absolutely loved the place as well. We are already planning our return.

Helen, Widnes

Another fantastic stay at the Lakeside Retreat. It is so beautiful and peaceful. We take our paddle board and enjoy pottering around on land and water. Lots of birds to be seen and heard as well as a great variety of trees and plants. Even in January, the weather was mild and plenty to see. Our dogs absolutely love it too. The cabin itself is nicely furnished, well equipped and spotlessly cleaned. Because you have so much space to yourself, we rarely leave but the Ludlow farm shop and Berrington Hall are worth a visit if you can drag yourself away from the retreat’s treetops and lakes.

Alistair, Thetford

We’ve visited lakeside retreat 3 times. We can’t rate it highly enough. The location is next to none with the landscaped grounds, the wildlife and the cabin. The hosts can’t do enough for you. We and our dog love it here. Can’t wait to return.

Jackie, Leicester

Just had our 10th visit to Lakeside Retreat, a perfect place to stay with our dog. Expansive grounds and lakes which are completely private and for your sole use which to me is amazing and completely unique! Hosts are very welcoming and accommodating and on hand if you need them. One of our absolute favourite places to stay!

Amanda, Cirencester

We had a wonderful stay at Lakeside Retreat at the end of the summer. It is so secluded and peaceful, but the cabin had everything we needed. We also enjoyed kayaking on the lake.

Lucy, Lewes, East Sussex

Our second visit to this magical place and it was just as beautiful as the first time ! As soon as we arrive, we feel relaxed and stress-free. The week goes too quickly, but it does give us time to plan our next visit ! So much wildlife to see in the most beautiful surroundings, you could never tire of this stunning hideaway, and absolutely fantastic for dogs too ! Thank you so much Victoria and Guy for sharing this wonderful haven of peace and tranquillity. See you next year.

Lakeside Retreat is totally outstanding. The beautifully tranquil setting is just paradise. The cabin is decorated and fully equipped to an exceptional high finish. We use the lake daily, whether it be swimming, paddle boarding or gently rowing in the provided boat and taking in all the sights and sounds from the wildlife that live within this truly amazing place. Each time we have visited, we never leave until it’s time to come home. But from what I hear there are lovely places close by to visit. We have been visiting yearly since 2018, and hope for this to continue for many years to come.

Gemma, Doncaster

An absolutely wonderful place. Calm and tranquil and the dog swam his socks off. We've never seen him so tired in the evening. The cabin had everything we needed and more. We will be back again, something we have never done before.

John, Northop

With winding lanes, charming villages, brilliant views of fields and hedgerows, this corner of Shropshire is an absolute find. And Lakeside Retreat even more so. The cottage is by two small lakes (large ponds?) connected by a stream, with all the seclusion and privacy you could want. We saw lots of wonderful birdlife, including a heron. Strolling around the lakes at dawn and dusk made for the perfect start and finish to each day. The cottage itself is lovely, everything clean and convenient. The area is beautiful and handy to shops and towns of interest. Would definitely & highly recommend

Jeremy, Hatfield

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The lodge has a very cosy feel to it and is tastefully furnished giving a home from home feel. The location of the lodge within the farm is quite quirky and certainly very private. Burt our Weimaraner had a lovely break too and if it had been a little warmer we would certainly have made more of the wonderful lake/s. I would certainly recommend to other dog lovers.

Carol, Maidstone

We had an incredible stay at the lake side retreat! Everything was perfect. A lovely lodge in beautiful country side. Our rescue dog Jake loved it too, the peace and quite with all the space. Victoria was super helpful too, with great recommendations and easy access to local walks from the lodge. We would love to go back!

Katie, Leicestershire

The setting for this cabin is idyllic, tucked away in the woods by a lake, surrounded by beautiful countryside. It was stormy outside but the cabin is cosy - we ventured out for a cold swim (February) and to explore Ludlow and other places. Charming hosts, a wonderful location, and a comfortable, well-equipped cabin - would definitely recommend.

Stay number 7 at the Lakeside Retreat, and as always we have had an amazing time. Such a unique and private spot where you can be free to wander and enjoy the wide open space that this retreat offers. We have always been very welcomed with our dog, the space is very private and secure and we always feel confident that she is safe when she is here. We especially enjoy the access to the lakes where you can take a dip and your dog can swim. The lodge is comfortable and very warm even staying during the winter months.

Amanda, Cirencester

Already booked again for 2022! The best staycation we’ve ever had- so peaceful and off the beaten track. We spent a lot of time just soaking up the atmosphere- daily swims in the lake and I did sunrise pilates and meditation on the veranda. Felt very zen! Property has everything you would need for a small family- cooking in and out (great fire pit and BBQ). Plus plenty of space to have your own time too. Victoria was the perfect host and was incredibly responsive if we needed her. A retreat away from the hustle and bustle, and a sanctuary within nature.

Rhiannon, Wivenhoe

Our week staying at Lakeside Retreat was a total delight. The cabin is comfortable and well equipped, but the highlight for us were the fabulous grounds and lakes that are all so beautifully and passionately maintained. Such a peaceful and idyllic slice of heaven that is abundant with wonderful wildlife. We can’t wait to return.

Alison, Bath

After our second visit to the stunning Lakeside Retreat, we still can’t wait to come back again! There is a special magic about it, all the gorgeous little details in the cabin and all the surrounding landscape. It’s a little slice of heaven, and so rare to find a place tucked away in a setting like this with two lakes and a waterfall all to yourself. Our dogs absolutely love jumping in for a swim (and so do we!).

Jen, Maidenhead

The Lakeside Retreat was very comfortable and equipped with everything we needed. The fresh eggs left for us on our arrival were much appreciated. We had a very peaceful, relaxing week plus wonderful sunny weather. We felt spoilt having such a lovely extensive area all to ourselves. Each morning we chose a different place to sit and have coffee. There was always something interesting to look at such as the Mallard ducks and ducklings, the shoal of fish in the lake, the pollinators on the flowers and around the insect houses. It was a real treat having a rowing boat in such a picturesque setting

Sarah, Hertfordshire

Back to our tiny peace of heaven... It was great to be back again and to see the continued work to make this special place our very own nature reserve. The peace and quite makes you relax as soon as you get out of the car and the automatic lawn mower is a great touch to help ensure you don’t get to see anyone else whilst you are there. We can’t wait to return with our little fur babies who love it there!

Peter, London

We stayed at Lakeside Retreat for a short winter break. The cabin was absolutely brilliant with everything you could possibly need including tea coffee and cake. The heating was on when we arrived so it was nice and toasty. Lovely comfortable bed. Lots of wildlife around and great for bird watching. Really enjoyed watching the kingfisher catch his dinner and the small robin that sat outside. Lots of lovely walks to be enjoyed . We were lucky enough to meet Jamie who manages the grounds & advised us where to spot the wildlife. Can't wait to return.

Introducing

Victoria Orchard

The family have lived around here for many years and have a small estate around Lakeside Retreat suitable for walking and exploring when livestock aren't out. They dredged and relined the lakes with clay, replanted several species of trees and created their woodland and wildlife project which is home to kingfishers, ducks, owls and many others.
