A super central hotel with views to the medieval Abbey and gentle Somerset hills. Originally three Georgian townhouses, now its 62 rooms are bright, art-filled spaces – although not huge – best to choose one at the back if you want a quieter space.
The feel is relaxed: chatty, professional staff look after you smoothly. Breakfast on croissants, bread from Bath’s best baker, or cooked treats in the restaurant. Drink cocktails or a G&T – the gin list is impressive – in the cool ArtBar after a full day getting acquainted with lovely Georgian architecture or walking in the surrounding Cotswolds.
Bath Abbey – fan-vaulted, imposing tower, stained-glass windows – is just across the square, the Roman Baths not much further; escape the crowds and walk over Pulteney Bridge for a gentle ramble beside the river Avon.
