The Experience

Ask why there’s a bear over the door and you’ll hear two stories: one about Newbury-born Paddington creator Michael Bond, the other about the town’s legendary coat, made in 1811. Both get a nod here, in a Georgian building that once sold paint and DIY and is now home to a fabulous island bar dressed in deep greens, burgundy and flashes of red.

26 rooms climb through the old and new parts of the building – ask for the Grand Room for exposed brick, space to spread out, and a roll-top tub, or pick something Comfy if that’s more your style. Salmon-pink or forest-green panelling, rich fabrics and eclectic prints give each one its own personality. Children are well looked after, too: each gets a drawstring bag stuffed with pencils, puzzles and chocolate to keep them busy.

Pull up a stool for a pint of Good Old Boy, brewed just up the road, or stay for dinner, where Raymond Blanc’s seasonal menu turns out properly delicious plates.

We think you'll love

  • The thoughtful in-room comforts, from an Illy coffee machine to a spritz of Bramley pillow spray before lights out
  • Bringing your four-legged friend – canine guests get their own menu, courtesy of Sir Woofchesters – think bark bangers and a doggy Sunday roast

Reviews

At one end of Newbury High Street, the Coat & Bear is not your typical pub with rooms, it's more contemporary bar (fabulous island bar) and restaurant with quiet, stylish, air-conditioned rooms, perfect for visiting Highclere Castle, the real life Downton Abbey, or as a stopover for A34/M4 travellers. Expect comfort and detail touches in the rooms, and good seasonal food.

Location

The neighbourhood

Newbury's racecourse draws the crowds for a flutter, while the West Berkshire Museum tells the full tale of that famous coat (with a copy on display). Further afield, Highclere Castle (five miles) is worth a visit, especially for fans of Downton Abbey. Trains from Newbury station, a 10-minute walk, run direct to London Paddington.
