The
Experience

A wiggly country road leads to the heart of racing country – just five minutes off the M4. But you don’t have to be mad about horses to be seduced by the Queens Arms. The new hands-on owners run a top team, and you feel it the moment you enter. As tasty food is ferried to groups of jolly lunchers and  in Barbour-wearing owners of gun dogs, the occasional champion jockey may be spotted at the bar. Families descend for roasts on Sundays; Hennessy cocktails clink with champagne glasses during Gold Cup week. The food is hearty, the portions generous and on Fridays the fish lands straight from Looe. There’s beef and Guinness pie, mussels with cream and chorizo, crab gratin with parmesan, game in season, scrumptious puds. The Queens is steeped in warmth and character, with a low-beamed bar, an intimate restaurant, an awned terrace facing west, and paddocks all around. A pity not to stay the night – and dogs get their own beds. If you like character go for the rooms in the pub. Ranging from cosy to large, they have coir floors, dark woods, deep mattresses, and lovely vibrant colours on the walls.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Vikki Brooks

  • Location, location, location...The Queens Arms is located just 3 miles off junction 14 of the M4 - an easy drive to Hungerford, Marlborough, Oxford and Swindon and is ideally situated between London and Bath, Wales and the West Country.
  • The Queens Arms has fantastic facilities including a lively bar, large restaurant, covered terrace, open patio and extensive garden where children and dogs are welcome. For private parties we have the exclusive Queens Lodge with its own terrace and garden.
  • Once settled at The Queens Arms it is easy to get lost in the countryside. Situated in the Valley of the Race Horse, the only disturbance in the beautiful village of East Garston is the clip clopping of hooves!
  • The Queens Arms is also in the heart of the Wessex Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with over a dozen iconic destinations within an hour’s drive including Stonehenge, Avebury and The White Horse at Uffington.
  • For those more interested in a bit of shopping there are the fantastic antique shops in Hungerford whilst the larger towns of Newbury, Marlborough, Cirencester, Bath and Oxford are all close to hand.
  • Newbury Racecourse is just 25 minutes away and for those that would like to participate in sport there is outstanding shooting and fishing available and for the more energetic, great routes for cyclists, walkers or runners.
