The Experience
An inspired collision of industrial Victorian chic and elegant Georgian architecture cuts a dash in an old Bristol square and will surely become an iconic landmark for the city. Stay in rooms which veer from small and deeply funky to downright movie-star special. All have bold, bright art and upcycled, vintage finds. Steam in a copper bath and loll about in robes while you tackle some toothsome treats from the mini-bar and beer, wine and gin from down the road.
Fresh, tasty a la carte breakfast from the open kitchen is served in the Boot Factory Bar, the Cafe and Restaurant or in the library with a crackling fire where a knock-out geometrically designed Rose Vickers presides. On balmy days you’ll be on the terrace – a great little sunspot or attending one of the events hosted here.
Explore independent shops on mutinous Stokes Croft, find good food on the harbourside, puff or bus up the hill to Clifton for cafés, smart shops and the stunning Suspension Bridge.

If you are looking for a hotel stay to inspire then this is the place for you. Nothing has been overlooked in their mission to make you comfortable, but it is all achieved in the most thoughtful and refreshing way. The staff were charming and the attention to detail appreciated - from the insider-tips sent ahead of my stay, the well made flat-white at breakfast, and the art on the walls. In short, everything is designed to make you feel welcomed and it was appreciated.

Location
The neighbourhood
Walk to St Paul's (famed for its Carnival), Cabot Circus for glossy shops and a cinema, Stokes Croft for vintage shops and Instagramable cafés, or head for the new harbourside with boat trips, M Shed and industrial museum for maritime history and exhibitions. There are foodie outlets galore at Wapping Wharf and green spaces for walks in Ashton Court (the lungs of Bristol) or up on the Downs in Clifton.
Local points of interest from Charlie & Justin Salisbury
- You're just a 5-10 minute stroll from creative Stokes Croft, where you'll find some of Bristol's best street art - Banksy anyone? - plus plenty of buzzing bars, cafes and independent shops all the way up Gloucester Road.
- Walk 20 minutes to the harbourside to soak up the atmosphere at weekends or on sunny days, then wander round to Wapping Wharf for a bite to eat from one of the many eateries housed in shipping containers beside the water.
- Leafy Portland Square is also home to Bristol's circus school - Circomedia - where you can try out classes in trapeze, aerial hoop and more.

Introducing
Charlie & Justin Salisbury
Justin Salisbury started his small boutique chain almost by accident when he took over his parents' run down guesthouse in Brighton when he was just 20. He did that place up on a shoestring by inviting local artists to decorate the rooms in return for a free stay. This turned out to be his winning formula and together with his wife Charlie they now have several Artist Residences.
We enjoyed our stay at The Artists Residence very much. The staff were super friendly, delicious food, tasty cocktails, a fantastic wine list. They upgraded us to a HUGE bedroom with a massive bath. Good towels and bed linen to boot. We can't fault it - and we'll certainly be back.
