The Experience

Your approach down winding, narrow lanes leads to an artist’s retreat. Lose track of time walking the coastal paths and wildlife spotting; after a day spent exploring head home to stretch out in the open-plan living and kitchen space. Tinkle on the piano, dive into the pile of games and books and stoke the wood-burner.

Walk all day then return to open the bottle of wine waiting for you – choose between two sun traps outside and watch the gently crashing waves.

The beach is your garden and is mere steps away – take a blanket and enjoy your breakfast with a side order of sand in your toes. The best way to start the day. Lay your head in simple rooms – the luckiest can see the sea from their pillow.

Reviews

We had a wonderful week at chapel cottage. Full of light, warmth and character. The kids had fun going wild on the deserted beach, we had tired wobbly legs from so many cliff walks in the wind and sun, and gained a bit of weight with all the lovely food ;). Was a great family time together, playing duets on the piano and watching the full moon rise from the window seat. It's not the newest decoration. But down to earth. And so close to nature. And you will relax. And that window seat....!!

This is a lovely home. I absolutely loved staying at the Chapel and would love to go back. My husband and I stayed for 5 days and wished we could have stayed longer. You are right by a lovely little beach and the coastal path. This is not a luxury stay, this is homely, quiet and comfortable house with enough room for 7 and a cot for a small child. Remote for sure but it's a short drive to get needed supplies. The host and care takers took great care of us.

Carrie, Hydes

The Chapel House is an ideal place for a relaxed Cornish break. In a quiet village, directly overlooking the beach, it is spacious, relaxing and a world away from the cares of daily life. The lofty ceiling in the main lounge provides a wonderful sense of space and the enormous arched window offers a perfect view of the beach and sea. The window even has a broad window-ledge, wide enough to sit on, perhaps with a glass of wine, as the sun goes down! The Chapel House is relaxed, bohemian and 'arty' in nature, with a feeling of serenity. As you can probably tell, we liked it a lot!!

What an amazing place! This was exactly what we needed after several months of lockdown! Beautiful location, and interesting quirky property. Yes it's a bit tired around the edges, but that does not in anyway detract from how lovely it is. The location couldn't be better, our kids were able to potter back and forth from the beach, and when the tide was in, it felt like our own private bay.

Helen, Stroud

The Chapel is in the most captivating beachside setting above a little hidden cove. Very carefully and thoughtfully restored by its owner, it's the perfect hideaway for families or groups of creatives all year round. Not your typical swanky super smart beach houses of today, instead very comfy and dearly loved. You might find the odd cobweb but that all adds to its charm!

Location

The neighbourhood

A handful of cottages and the beach are your closest neighbours; it’s peaceful here. For sustenance, Truro and Austell are 25 minutes away - emergency situations can be remedied at a small shop just ten-minutes away. In 20 minutes you can reach Veryan, Portscatho and St Mawes for pubs and restaurants. Stock up on fresh fish, Cornish Yarg and Fairings.

Local points of interest from Gabriel Amherst

  • Our quiet seaside hamlet has no shops but East Portholland has a little café, Pebbles. Veryan Post Office and The Spar/Texaco are nearest. Get groceries delivered by the Cornish Food Box company; buy locally caught fish, lobster and crab from Curgurrell Farm Shop.
  • Da Bara, a fabulous artisan bakery and café, is a 10-minute drive. Walk an hour along the coastal path to the Ship Inn at Portloe or drive there in 10 minutes. The Lugger at Portloe offers ‘high end’ dining and is nice for an evening drink.
  • A little further along the coast is the Nare Hotel, great for afternoon tea, an evening drink or a meal at the Quarter Deck. The King’s Head is a favourite destination of my family and Chapel House guests. They serve excellent local food and the fish menu is extensive.
  • The Lost Gardens of Heligan are a 15-minute drive, and working fishing village Mevagissey is a short drive from there, with a bustling harbourside - the ideal place to go to for fish and chips and ice cream, plus boat trips for mackeral fishing.
  • National Trust properties nearby: Trelissick, reached by the King Harry Ferry; Lanhydrock, near Bodmin; the gardens at Caerhays Castle, open to the public in spring, featuring a world famous collection of camelias and magnolias.
  • If you are fan of Rosmund Pilcher novels or the German TV adaptations, it may interest to know that Chapel House was used as a film location in August 2019! The title of the film it appears in has just been released and is called A Teaspoon of Love.

Introducing

Gabriel Amherst

Professional musician Gabriel has retreated to this slice of Cornwall for 20 years, visiting for fresh air and creative inspiration. She gently renovated the 18th-century chapel into the cosy, comfy home it is today. There’s a pair of locals at the end of the phone should you need them but you’re free to pretend this beautiful chapel is your own for a few days.
