The Experience

You’ll feel at home the minute you walk in – this is a lovely house for families or groups of friends to relish their time together and have fun. Picture windows show off far-reaching views and there are plenty of places from which to admire them – a comfy sitting room, conservatory, open-plan kitchen and dining room and a separate snug. You shouldn’t ever need to feel on top of one another here.

Four bedrooms upstairs have goose down, crisp cotton and more of those views – lovely to sit in bed with a morning cuppa and watch the weather unfurl. Even if you’re stuck indoors you’ll feel relaxed here. The well-stocked family kitchen is a sociable spot for cooks and everyone can join in. You’re left a hamper of bits and bobs but it’s a short walk to Pendeen for stocking up.

Join the rugged Coast Path from the garden gate, hop into the wood-fired hot tub, fire up the barbecue in the garden while children safely gambol.

We think you'll love

  • The wonderful walking on the Coast Path and inland. You can pretend you're in an episode of Poldark
  • Watching sunsets from the hot tub or stargazing on clear nights – if you're lucky you'll even see the Milky Way
  • Buying good food from local shops, bringing it back to cook, eating outdoors on long sunny evenings

Reviews

As soon as I arrived at The Captain's House I felt peaceful and calm. I was drawn to the recliners in the conservatory and could have sat there for hours taking in the view. The house feels like a home from home, not a show room and I think anyone would be very comfy staying here.

Michael, Teignmouth

A lovely position and presented like a family home with lots of kitchen equipment, books, and odds and sods. The bedrooms are not huge, buts really do they need to be. Superb views and highly recommended.

Alison, Ledbury

A wonderful base for our holiday, our 3rd visit, & again it was wonderful to call your home our home for a whole week of luxurious bliss! Getting together with grown up ‘children’ & partners, cooking & eating together a joy in such a well equipped kitchen & ample space for everyone to relax together, or apart. We all loved the conservatory, looking out at THAT view, taking in moody skies before venturing out of the door into paradise. It is a privilege to stay in such a loved home surrounded by beauty inside the home as well as outside! I love the artwork & geology display!

Joanna, Bath

We rented The Captain's House for several weeks and had a wonderful stay. The house is very homely and was a perfect place to work and to unwind - it's ideal for several people to work/rest in different areas and not be disturbed. The view from every room is stunning and we all felt rejuvenated after our stay. Waitrose deliver which was an added bonus! Altogether the perfect home from home with so much to explore and soak up right on the doorstep.

Rosie, Luton

The house is in a fantastic location - sea views from practically every window and directly on the South West Coast Path. It was easily big enough to fit four adults and four kids without feeling on top of each other. The hot tub is a great touch and very easy to use. We stayed in late October/early November and the house was warm and cosy throughout. Highly recommend.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're at the end of a long single-track road which ends shortly after the houses. You face dramatic cliffs and the sea in each direction apart from east which faces fields. Pendeen is a 15-minute walk for a farmers' market, pubs and a small grocery shop. St Just is a 10-minute drive, Newlyn and Penzance about 15 minutes. Beautiful beaches are plentiful for a day with a picnic.

Local points of interest from Patrick & Sue

  • The South West coastal path is directly opposite the front gate - head off through tin mining country to Cape Cornwall and Sennen.
  • To the South, the house looks towards Levant Mine, made famous in "Poldark". To the North, Gurnard's Head is clearly visible - 2 1/2 hours' walk (Stop for refreshment at the Gurnard's Head pub, then catch the Lands End Breezer open-top bus back to Pendeen).
  • Mermaid's Pool, a local swimming hole, is 10 minutes' walk, just by the tiny Boat Cove. 15 minutes further on is the spectacular and little-visited Portheras beach. Several other "secret" swimming places are listed in the welcome folder at the house.
  • West Cornwall is renowned for its proliferation of ancient monuments - check out Lanyon Quoit, Carn Euny and the stone circle at Bostraze to name but a few and all within 10 minutes' drive.
  • The Captain's House was built for the Captain of the coastguard whose main job was apprehending smugglers - there is a cellar (now sealed) at the property, where all the contraband was stored after confiscation.
  • Sit in the conservatory and watch the birds on the feeding station - bird food supplied. We've seen ravens, kestrels, peregrines and even the elusive Cornish chough pass by our windows!

Introducing

Patrick & Sue

Patrick and Sue have owned the house for many years. They have a background in restaurants and catering, and run a much-loved little haunt in Bristol. This is their holiday home too so it's very family friendly and much of the art on the walls is by Sue, an accomplished artist. You let yourselves in but there is a local person handy if you need help.
