The Experience

The Eden Valley sits hidden between the Lakes and the Pennines, steeped in history, with two rivers snaking through it and a delightful absence of crowds. The house, built of local Lazonby sandstone, is handsome, and interiors are gorgeous: rich fabrics, grand views, a hugely comfortable main sitting room, a study for quiet time, a music room with a Steinway – even if you fill the place you’ll never feel on top of one another.

Real cooks will find the roomy, well-equipped kitchen a joy, you can order hampers or your own chef ahead, and there’s tons of space for helpers and chatterers. Opulent bedrooms with sparkling en suite bathrooms and gentle views are a boon to the spirits, and the peace is deep.

Long summer days will be spent in the garden, dining al fresco, easing walk-weary legs in the hot tub, playing games on the smooth lawns, gazing over the lake to the deer, celebrating the very best of England on this fifteen hundred-acre estate.

We think you'll love

  • Visiting the estate activity centre, The Outpost, and taking part in archery, axe throwing, clay pigeon shooting, paddle boarding or a wellbeing session
  • Discovering this very special part of the world, its wonderful walks, birdlife and history, feeling pleased you're not in the thick of the Lakes but being near enough to visit
  • Tackling the Pennine Fells – on clear days the views from the tops are endless

Reviews

What an amazing place for a very special celebration, either as a family get-together or for a group of friends. Eden Hall is a wonderful, very luxurious house and the grounds provide the ideal opportunity to get away from it all and relax in nature.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're within walking distance of Edenhall Country House Hotel for a bar and evening meals, or a short five-minute drive to Langwathby for a shop and the Shepherds Inn, good for a pint or pub food, also takeaway. Penrith is a 10-minute drive, a market town with a colourful past, lots of hidden alleyways, courtyards, a station and shops. The Lakes are a further 20 minutes for boating, tours and walks.

Local points of interest from Catherine Anderson

  • Allium at Askham Hall, a hotel, health barn, café and beautiful restaurant. It sits at the centre of the Lowther Estate (where much of the food on the menu comes from) and offers the best seasonally driven cuisine available for many miles.
  • Ullswater Wake and Surf. Wake surfing on Ullswater, one of England's most picturesque lakes, during a sunny day is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
  • Keswick, a location greatly known for its beautiful town and surrounding hikes. A must-visit that is not too far from Edenhall.
  • There are many fine ways to climb Helvellyn, but an ascent via Striding Edge has to be considered the most spectacular of all.
  • Aira Force, a beautiful stroll alongside a lush, forested creek is a great way to embrace a lovely day in the Lake District.
  • Lowther Castle & Gardens, take the kids out for a nice sunny day stroll through the rose fields and learn about the history behind the magnificent castle ruin that remains.
