The Experience
Step into a beautifully designed living room with a modern wood-burner, plenty of soft seating, local art and pretty fabrics. Much use has been made of natural materials (slate, wood, wool) and the feeling is one of calm – although there are other buildings around you, you’re not overlooked. The kitchen has all the gear you might need and there’s room for two to work together – you’re also left a welcome pack of fresh flowers, homemade cake and a bottle of prosecco.
Downstairs to a very attractive bedroom with a Harrison pocket-sprung mattress (this king can be made up as twins) and designer lighting. The gleaming next-door bathroom has fun Scion towels and Pure Lakes handmade soaps and lotions.
Step out for wonderful walks in glorious countryside, stride up fells for even longer views, explore market towns, take boat trips on the lake. If the weather isn’t playing you can hunker down in the warm, listen to music or watch a film.

Another fantastic stay here at Hares Garth. A beautiful cottage, so comfortable and warm. We have enjoyed lovely walks all week and chocolate cake afterwards was most welcome. Thank-you Helen. We will be back next year.

I would like to add our thanks to Helen and Richard for creating such a beautiful and comfortable holiday home. The location too is perfect and as I’m writing this, I’ m taking a last look at the panoramic views from the living room. It was our first time back to the Lakes in 25 years but we will return very much sooner – hopefully next year!

Having stayed in holiday cottages for 40 years, Hares Garth sets the highest standards of equipment and comfort that are rarely matched. Well worth the 8 hour journey. Thank you Helen and Richard.

Location
The neighbourhood
It's a romantic, wild spot on the flank of the valley – the drive down Kirkstone Pass is memorable. Walks and cycles will be sublime, spotting red deer and red squirrels. You can hike up Helvellyn, walk up to and around Angle Tarn – good for a swim too. There's a pub in Patterdale, a mile away. Ambleside is seven miles and has a choice of restaurants (two with Michelin stars), good cafés and a cinema. Glenridding is two miles for local shops, Windermere is 10.
Local points of interest from Helen Griffiths
- Park you car and just walk from the door, as you are right in the heart of the Lake District National Park with Helvellyn, Fairfield and The Ullswater Way all on your doorstep. There are books and guides aplenty in the cottage and we are on hand to advise.
- Fancy Wild Swimming? Helen can help you find some lovely spots in mountain tarns, or sheltered bays on Ullswater which is just 1.5 miles from the cottage.
- The bustling town of Ambleside is just 15 minutes drive over the most dramatic (but recently upgraded and re-surfaced) Kirkstone Pass. It has a great independent cinema with vegetarian restaurants attached, plus cafes and Michelin starred restaurants.
- Patterdale is a beautiful valley - just off the busier central drag, it is the perfect place to escape & breathe. Rural life moves slowly and you will love the immersion in nature, the rhythm of the farming year and chorus of birdsong and baa-ing sheep!
- A foodie tour would start with picking up a gorgeous sourdough loaf from Lovingly Artisan and a freshly roasted coffee at Rinaldo's both near Kendal, then on to Levens Hall for a wander around the atmospheric topiary garden prior to soup and a pint at Heft
- For a relaxed evening meal try The Yan at Grasmere, The Horse and Farrier at Dacre or our favourite cafe in Ambleside: Force is open weekend evenings in the summer for delicious pizza on the covered terrace which has great views. Or go for lunch - it's fab
