The Experience

The feel is very private and the road isn’t busy. You have a small courtyard space for outdoor dining as well as a larger garden with a lawn for sprawling and birdwatching – look out also for red squirrels. Views from here are over the estate and there’s a hot tub for your weary limbs after a gruelling fell hike or a long cycle ride. You’re right between the Pennines and the Lakes, so you have masses of choice.

Inside is cosy, romantic, colourful. You can choose between relaxing in front of the wood-burning stove (plenty of books and board games) or in a separate TV room. There’s also a magical indoor/outdoor secret garden for al fresco meals and a chiminea for cooler nights. Cook up a storm in the smart kitchen, order a hamper in advance or a chef to cook for you. The master bedroom is upstairs and there’s a separate double downstairs.

Sleep peacefully, it’s quiet here – deep in the Eden valley and miles away from the hordes of tourists in the Lakes, which is near enough to visit, then come home again.

Reviews

West Lodge is the place to come for either a quiet, romantic getaway or for a family of four to enjoy time in nature. All the estate cottages are luxurious and elegant, set in glorious peaceful countryside, yet also close to the drama of the Lake District and Pennine Fells.

Location

The neighbourhood

The estate is very beautiful and there are plenty of activities, as well as pretty walks down to and along the river Eden. You can walk to Edenhall Country House Hotel for a bar and evening meals, or drive five minutes to Langwathby village. Here you'll find a small shop and the Shepherds Inn. Penrith is a ten-minute drive for Cranstons, a good antiques barn, bookshops and a train station.

Local points of interest from Catherine Anderson

  • Allium at Askham Hall, a hotel, health barn, café and beautiful restaurant. It sits at the centre of the Lowther Estate (where much of the food on the menu comes from) and offers the best seasonally driven cuisine available for many miles.
  • Ullswater Wake and Surf. Wake surfing on Ullswater, one of England's most picturesque lakes, during a sunny day is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
  • Keswick, a location greatly known for its beautiful town and surrounding hikes. A must-visit that is not too far from Edenhall.
  • There are many fine ways to climb Helvellyn, but an ascent via Striding Edge has to be considered the most spectacular of all.
  • Aira Force, a beautiful stroll alongside a lush, forested creek is a great way to embrace a lovely day in the Lake District.
  • Lowther Castle & Gardens, take the kids out for a nice sunny day stroll through the rose fields and learn about the history behind the magnificent castle ruin that remains.
