The Experience

Many little gates lead to your own porch and then an open-plan room in rich, restful colours and with glorious views over the hillside. A big wood-burner with an unlimited log supply makes sure you stay cosy, Swedish cushions and throws add charm and the lighting is thoughtful. A barn sliding door leads to a good-sized kitchen with all you might need, plus one of Lou’s home-baked cakes and a bottle of wine.

A bird feeder in your enclosed gravel garden attracts all the usual suspects but also woodpeckers, nuthatches and you may even catch a glimpse of the resident sparrowhawk. From here you can walk straight into the mixed woodland surrounding you, mainly ash and rhododendron – magnificent in spring. For longer walks join the Limestone Way, 46 miles of challenging moorland with rivers to cross.

Return to two neat-as-a-pin bedrooms with crisp bedding, Velux windows for stargazing and scented French soap for the shower.

Reviews

Pack up your troubles and head for the glorious Peak District. This is a great starting point, a super comfy place to come home to, and owner Alan can give keen fell climbers, cyclists and walkers all the best local tips about where to go, and more importantly where not to. Everything is near yet you'll feel nicely private and remote.

This lovely cottage is very well appointed and in a beautiful setting, and Lou and Al are excellent hosts - so welcoming and helpful. There's lots of kitchen equipment and the bed linen is high quality. We loved the artwork decorating the walls. We made great use of the gravel garden, eating most of our meals on the picnic table and spending evenings sitting round the firepit. It's hardly necessary to use the car - so many fabulous walks straight from the door in this is glorious part of the Peak District.

Kate, York

We had a lovely weekend in this comfortable and stylish cottage, and appreciated all the welcoming touches. Walks from the door are amazing - we especially enjoyed walking up Chee Dale, where we had a close encounter with a heron. The walk was so varied in scenery but beautiful all the way. Another walk up Monsal Dale was equally gorgeous.

The cottage was the perfect place to see in the new year - lots of different walks straight from the garden and a wood burner to return to at the end of the day. The cottage itself was really thoughtfully designed, and we were given such a warm welcome by the hosts Lou and Al (including a freshly made Bakewell tart!). We’ve already planned a longer return visit.

Katy, Watford

I stayed in Little Bank with 2 friends and I can’t recommend it enough. Lou and Al were absolutely fantastic hosts. We arrived at the beautiful cottage to a homemade Bakewell tart and a bottle of red wine. We woke up to snow on our first morning…and a power cut! But Lou and Al couldn’t do enough to make us feel comfortable and looked after. Wood for the log fire brought to us; kettles of boiling water for hot drinks; offers of lifts to places to eat should we have wanted. But if anything the power cut gave us our ‘get away from it all’ weekend we actually wanted so thank you!

Location

The neighbourhood

You're 150 yards up a single lane so you'll feel quite remote but it's only a five-minute walk to Millers Dale, where you’ll also find the station with The Refreshment Room - walkers and cyclists can pick up a picnic and join the Monsal Trail. Amble along the river Wye to Litton Mill, visit Monk's Dale Nature Reserve for wildflowers, pick up excellent fish and chips from Tideswell, 1.5 miles away. Chatsworth is eight miles.

Local points of interest from Lou & Alan Renfree

  • Spend a whole day out exploring Chatsworth Estate with its acres of parkland, award winning gardens, farm shop and varied scheduled events throughout the year or visit romantic Haddon Hall on the banks of the river Wye in Bakewell.
  • Venture south to the beautiful Dovedale valley and the famous stepping stones and then take in the scenic White Peak villages of Tissington and Ilam.
  • Keen on design? The David Mellor Round Building cutlery factory and Design shop / cafe is a must at nearby Hathersage.
  • Little Bank is only 6 miles from the Derbyshire spa town of Buxton. Visit the warm natural spring of St Ann’s Drinking Well, Pavilion Gardens, Opera House or the newly renovated Grade 1 listed Crescent.
  • To the North and only a short drive away is the dramatic Dark Peak area. Visit picturesque Castleton and its famous limestone caves, the village of Edale marking one end of the iconic Pennine Way or watch the sunrise or sunset at the summit of Mam Tor.
  • No trip to The Peak would be complete without sampling the ‘Original (and very delicious) Bakewell Pudding. But be warned it may not be your last!

Introducing

Lou & Alan Renfree

Lou runs her beautiful by-appointment shop Chalet at Home from the other end of the building and you'll see many examples of her products in the cottage. Alan is a retired engineer but confesses to being 'quite nerdy' about fell running, walking and cycling so he's your man for advice on routes. They renovated the house and the cottage completely by themselves and want you to feel very much at home here.
