The Experience

What luck for the village that they have now got a community hub – and what a hub! This eye-catching 17th-century building sits on the main street with nine bedrooms across the upper two floors and the rambling bar, dining rooms and conservatory (with retractable roof) downstairs. There’s a proper bar area for drinkers and an excellent range of local ales, gin and wine from the Hattersley family wine merchant. Relax in comfort by the wood-burning stoves among a mixture of old prints and paintings.

You’ll eat well as the pub is ‘lovingly stubborn about only using produce from Peak District farmers, brewers and artisan producers’. A short, seasonal menu has classics with a modern twist and most dietary needs are met. You’ll sleep well too in rather swish bedrooms, ranging in size, and all with good coffee, fresh milk and smart bathrooms.

The popular suntrap dining terrace is for long summer lunches and suppers with friends and family.

Reviews

Rescued from closure by Longbow Venues in 2024, this vibrant, beautifully refurbished pub with rooms enjoys a pretty stone village location in the heart of the Peak District. Expect warm and inviting bedrooms spread across two floors – the best are the spacious suites – and good fresh pub food on seasonal menus that champion local artisan producers. A comfortable base close to Chatsworth Estate.

The perfect spot from which to explore the Peak District – walks are sublime. You're near to Bakewell for cafés, shops and a good market. Chatsworth House could be a whole day out admiring the furniture, tapestries and sculpture as well as old masters. The grounds, much of which were modelled by Capability Brown, are stunning. Visit Haddon Hall too, built in the 1380s – a fairytale marvel.
