The Experience
An open-plan layout and high, beamed ceilings give a roomy feel to this romantic bolthole. It’s cosy in winter with the wood-burner blazing merrily, top-notch designer lighting, underfloor heating and sink-into sofa – just the ticket for staying in and watching the weather through the large windows. On balmy days you’ll be out on one of two patio areas, chasing the sun, having al fresco lunches and suppers, enjoying views across the adjacent fields and out into the countryside beyond.
The bedroom has a well-dressed bed, plump feather and down pillows and duvet and a large window opposite – sitting up in bed with a morning cup of tea will warm the cockles of your heart. The shower room has a capacious rain shower and you’re left big fluffy towels.
Cooks will be happy in the hand-painted wooden kitchen, well equipped with all you need and with plenty of basics. Kind Rachael leaves you home-baked chocolate brownies as a welcome.

Location
The neighbourhood
Walkers will be in heaven. It's less than ten minutes to The Red Lion in the village, which has a micro-brewery, an excellent Sardinian chef and a blue cheese making business. An hour's walk will take you to The Flying Childers in Stanton in Peak, a great traditional pub. The active can wild swim, Go Ape, clay pigeon shoot, ride a horse or go climbing. Youlgreave is a short drive, and there are three National Trust properties within 50 mins.
Local points of interest from Rachael & Gerry O'Rourke
- Walk from the cottage to the pretty village of Youlgreave via the Limestone Way and Robin Hood's Stride rock tor, stone circle and hermit's cave. Take a dip in the river Bradford before grabbing lunch in one of the pubs or Fountain Bakery and café.
- Spend the day exploring Chatsworth House (15-min drive) - Pemberley in Pride and Prejudice - with its incredible art collections and extensive gardens Get lost in the maze then have a picnic by the cascade. Stock up at the farm shop afterwards!
- Hire bikes and go cycling along the Tissington Trail - stop for refreshments at Herbert's Fine English Tea Rooms by the beautiful Tissington Hall, or hire bikes at Hassop Station and ride along the Monsal Trail to the stunning Monsal Head Viaduct.
- Explore 900-year-old Haddon Hall (5-min drive), 'the most perfect house to survive from the Middle Ages' according to Simon Jenkins. Owned by one family for the duration of its existence and one of the most important historic houses in England!
- Gorgeous Buxton Opera House is an absolute gem offering a very varied selection of entertainment and an International Opera, Jazz and Literature festival, in the spa town of Buxton built by the Duke of Devonshire to rival Bath.
- Walk to The Flying Childers pub in Stanton in the Peak (voted in the top 50 traditional pubs by the Financial Times) across Stanton Moor, past the Nine Ladies Druid Stone Circle.
