The Experience
The ancient house was built in the 1500s (although an even older house existed on the site before the Domesday Book) and there are fine Tudor beams, fireplaces and panels, beautifully restored. Spread out in the beamed sitting room, chuck another log onto the inglenook fire and send teenagers and gamers to the TV room – those who seek total peace also have a snug with board games and jigsaws. Upstairs bedrooms (children will adore choosing which staircase) are delightfully quiet with well-dressed beds and views.
Down ancient stone steps find a beautiful, light-filled kitchen with all the gear (and lots of books) for committed cooks, plenty of space, a long table for convivial meals and a south-west facing wooden balcony for sunset watching over woods and corn fields. The woodland garden has ping pong, badminton, a trampoline and a fire pit – even a treehouse.
Walks start from the door and you’re close to the South West Coast Path for hearty hikes.

We spent a week here for a milestone family birthday. Situated in a stunning location: undulating hills, and far reaching views, Edric’s is fantastic for children with beautiful gardens and plenty of space to run free and play. The house itself is very special, we loved the original features including a carved Tudor fireplace and ancient beams. The light-filled kitchen has an incredible balcony overlooking the fields and valley beyond. The outdoor sofas and dining area were a joy on warm evenings. Close to amazing family beaches, we loved our week and were most kindly looked after. Flawless

We had a wonderful stay with the whole family - grandparents, parents and 5 young children. The house is beautiful, nestling in gorgeous gardens set at different levels within stunning countryside. It is very tastefully decorated and steeped in history, ( including some low ceiling beams!) but warm and welcoming. The trampoline and the treehouse were much appreciated, as were the terrace and the views. Eric was very helpful and welcoming. We enjoyed several trips to the beaches and coastal walks, all of which are close by. Altogether a truly memorable holiday.

We had a fabulous weekend at Edric’s Farmhouse. There’s a real wow factor as you come down the drive as the location is stunning, like you have a whole valley to yourself. We loved the history of the house, all the old beams, carved fireplaces etc and it's perfect for a big group. We liked the open plan kitchen dining room – cooking and having big meals together. The balcony off the kitchen and the views from it are amazing. There are some nice walks from the front door and we loved walking along the coast path with pub lunch on the way. Lots of great beaches too. We’d love to come back.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're buried deep in the Blackdown Hills, an AONB, so walking is sublime and you'll find OS maps and suggestions for walks in the house. Tytherleigh (a 8-min drive) has a farm shop and a pub. River Cottage is 15 mins for eating or shopping for excellent food - they've spawned quite a foodie scene down here so you'll find lots of good places to shop and eat. Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast is an easy 20-minute drive.
Local points of interest from Catherine & Robert Walker
- Beaches: the wonderful Jurassic Coast is 20 minutes away with its great selection of local beaches - sandy ones, big empty pebble ones and fossil hunting ones. Learn to paddleboard at Charmouth, go on a fishing trip at Lyme Regis.
- Food: Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage is a couple of miles away. Many other great places to eat out - from fine dining to beach shacks. We can recommend farm shops, vineyards and other places selling the best of the local produce.
- Walks: you’ll find Ordinance Survey maps in the house along with suggestions for walks from the front door and further afield. The South West Coast path is a favourite - options for gentle strolls or more challenging hikes - and stunning views.
- Days out: plenty of local attractions for kids – Crealy Theme Park, Pecorama, Wildwood Escot, Axe Valley Wildlife Park. Plus visit National Trust properties like Killerton and Branscombe. Or hire bikes to explore the country lanes and local pubs.
- Local towns: nearby Lyme Regis is fun all year round – quirky shops, cafes, mini golf etc. Bridport is also great to wander round – including for antiques and art. Local markets in Axminster on Thursdays, Bridport on Saturdays.
- Garden and games: stay home for badminton, trampoline, table tennis, swingset and tree house in the big garden. Widescreen TV, board games, jigsaws etc inside.

Introducing
Catherine & Robert Walker
Catherine and Robert love living in the Blackdown Hills and walking the nearby Jurassic Coast - dipping in its waters whenever they have the chance. They arrived here after a gradual journey westwards from London. First to Dorset, then moving to this part of Devon after they bought their farmhouse. They've kept all the lovely old things but fixed all the broken stuff. Now they welcome visitors.
The first glimpse of Edric’s Farmhouse catches your breath, as does the intrigue of walking through its history, down ancient stone steps into the modern kitchen/dining room with stunning views over its garden and the Devon hills beyond. All these elements fuse into a fabulous home. The apparatus in the garden kept all ages happy (we were eleven people, ages 3-86) and a comment from one little grandson to another upon discovering the tree house “This is my dream house!!” still makes me smile. The beds were super comfortable. Everything to love!
