The Experience

Little wonder the Fursdon family has farmed here for so many generations. It’s beautiful – hugged by glorious Devon countryside near Exeter. Stroked by flowers, wisteria and sunshine, the mellow stone gardener’s cottage rests privately in a 750-acre estate.

Wake in a big, bright bedroom to vast views and a dawn chorus. Climb the private terraced garden and flop under a sweet chestnut with a glass of something cool. Relax inside by the log-burner, or in a quiet snug with plenty of armchairs.

This place was made for lovers of the great outdoors, with space for muddy boots and well-behaved dogs. Stroll to iron-age Cadbury Castle, discover quaint villages, farm shops, foodie pubs and revel in the Fursdon history: on Open Days, you can tour the manor and family museum.

Reviews

Andrew, Poole

What a lovely welcome by your sensational sweet peas! And extremely yummy Brownies. Thank you, we have really enjoyed our stay very much. Lovely to have the tour of your beautiful home and such a gorgeous garden. We admire your planting combinations. Cream teas sealed the visit – delicious. Thank you.

Dick, Oxford

This attractive and well-furnished cottage is secluded with scenic views across beautiful unspoilt countryside to Dartmoor, but still within easy reach of the facilities of Tiverton and Exeter. For explorers there are attractive walks through deep woods, and up to Cadbury's Iron Age Fort with interesting information boards on its history, including during the time of the English Civil War. When open, a visit to Fursdon House adds to one's insights into the Fursdon family resident from the early 13th century, plus there are great cream teas in the Coach Hall!

Martin and Suki, Exeter

Another wonderful stay here! Only 10 miles from Exeter, but it’s a different world – so peaceful and beautiful! Thank you so much to Jo and especially Becky for being so welcoming and helpful and thank you to the Fursdons for letting us stay, and for the way they obviously look after their land with such care. It’s a treasure! I’m sure we’ll be back…

Richard, Beverley

"Thank you once again for a lovely few days in paradise. Fursdon is looking wonderful and as beautiful as ever! Enjoyed using the parasol on the lawn – a great addition. We enjoyed our walks, especially to the meadow garden (a beautiful space) and the easy access to local places of interest and great places to eat (we recommend 'The Lost Kitchen'). Such a peaceful place, and timeless. We shall be back and thank you again – you are doing a wonderful job!"

Sally, Oxford

It’s always a delight to return to Fursdon. The warm and comfortable cottage and the surrounding grounds are beautifully maintained and the setting is glorious: steep valleys and tiny Devon lanes full of wild flowers in Spring and Summer - we spotted an orchid on our last visit. Birdsong greets you from first light and we saw buzzards, woodpeckers and song thrushes. Very many thanks to the helpful and hardworking team who keep it all running so smoothly. We can’t wait to be back again next month.

Location

The neighbourhood

Fursdon Cottage is on the historic Fursdon country estate. Woodland walks and an iron age hill top fort are right on the doorstep but for most other things you need a car. The nearest village, Thorverton, is 2 miles away and has a good little shop and a pub that serves food. It only takes half an hour and you're in Exeter with shops, supermarkets, plenty of places to eat and culture to explore.

Local points of interest from Emily Fursdon

  • Fursdon Cottage has the most spectacular views & there are lots of walks across the estate, right from the front door! We'll give you lots of information in your folder about where's good to walk (with or without the dog).
  • Families love it here and there is lots to entertain kids locally, from the famous Bickleigh Railway Centre to the brilliant museum RAMM in Exeter, as well as cycle trails, Clip 'n' Climb, water sports and some excellent family-friendly restaurants.
  • Fursdon is brilliantly situated for exploring Devon and its amazing array of beaches, both north and south. We have lots of favourites and can recommend ones for food, views, waves, bustle, peace - whatever you want really; we are truly spoilt for choice!
  • Exeter's history is longer than Fursdon's! The 11th century Cathedral is a must and often hosts craft markets on the Cathedral Green. Red Coat guides offer walking tours of all the best and most historic areas.
  • Dartmoor with its Tors is wonderful but try exploring Exmoor, where the heather topped moors, rivers and valleys tumble down to the dramatic north coast. A little further west it settles down to the sandy surfing beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe.
  • As well as Fursdon's own historic house which is open in the summer, there are two lovely National Trust houses within a 20-minute drive: Killerton House, with its lovely costume displays and Knightshayes Court, with its Gothic splendour.

Introducing

Emily Fursdon

Ollie and Emily and their two children are the 24th generation of the Fursdon family to be custodians of this ancient estate. Conserving and developing the estate to keep it sustainable for future generations of family and visitors is an exciting challenge for them and an ongoing project. They love to share their passion for the place with cottage guests.
