Horry Mill

A truly beautiful cottage in a wonderfully tranquil location. Warm and welcoming, Horry Mill is the perfect base for exploring Devon or simply as a place to unwind and get away from it all. We visited for a few days in March, and after months of rain it could have been a dull, grey visit - but this couldn't be further from the truth! Warmed by central heating, a Rayburn AND a huge inglenook open fire the cottage couldn't have been cosier. Everything we needed was laid on and we were welcomed by a wonderful cream tea. Dog friendly, with walks literally outside the front door. Highly recommended

Returning for our second visit, we now understand why so many people have been coming back to Horry Mill for years, for generations – it gets under your skin, and there's nowhere else quite like it. We had a week off work, and we just couldn't think of anywhere we'd rather be. What makes it so special is that it's a real place, not an artfully conceived holiday experience. And at its heart is simple generosity - gorgeous baking and treats, big plentiful towels, sprigs of lavender in the wardrobe, unlimited logs in the woodstore. Please don't change anything. It's just perfect.

This is THE most delightful and characterful cottage, hidden away in absolutely stunning woodland - it's peaceful and utterly charming. We arrived to find a plate of delicious homemade scones and felt instantly at home. Sonia looked after us beautifully, the cottage was immaculate and comfortable with a really well equipped kitchen. We went for many wonderful walks from the cottage, and further afield on Dartmoor and to the coast. I couldn't recommend more highly. Thank you Sonia for everything including the fresh eggs and apples!

We had an amazing stay at Horry Mill, the house was charming, spotlessly cleaned, had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The bedding was so comfortable, huge bathtub for soaking. (Shower also available). Cosy sitting room with huge fireplace. Sonia left us a homemade tart that was devoured. We loved how peaceful it was, beautiful woods for us to walk in with running water from stream that meandered its way through the property. Highly recommend staying at Horry Mill!

We have been regular visitors to Horry Mill for more than 25 years, both as a couple, as well as with family and friends. The peacefulness and tranquility of the situation of the cottage is perfect to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Local pubs and shops are a short drive away, as well as Barnstaple and Exeter being within an hour’s drive. Sonia and Simon are perfect hosts, and they always provide a lovely welcome!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Horry Mill Cottage. Its tranquil setting, in woods near the stream was restful and restorative. We were there when the wildflowers attracted myriads of insects, butterflies and a large dragonfly skimming the garden. Sonia has thought of everything. The kitchen is fully equipped and she is very generous in treats around the place including a cream tea, Miles tea, chocolates and Prosecco. This is a quirky property imbibed with history including wonky stairs and old windows of character. If you want modern and perfect it’s not for you. We loved it.

Horry Mill exists in its own little world: a wonderful escape from the relentless demands of modern life. Simon and Sonia are generous hosts, and they are doing a great job balancing farming with protecting and enhancing their land for wildlife. Our stay unfortunately coincided with some abysmal weather, but the cottage is a very cosy, welcoming place to hole up and relax when getting out and about isn't much of an option. In fact, you may not feel the need to stray far whatever the weather. A real find, and after two weeks we understood completely why so many visitors return again and again.

We had a lovely stay at the cottage. Very relaxing and peaceful and the cottage is well equipped. It was particularly good to meet the owners too and chat about the area and the farm. We were very appreciative of their time. As a nature lover, I loved the wild flowers in the garden and surrounding area. A memorable holiday.

We had wonderful stay at Horry Mill. We used to visit many years ago with our children and had great family holidays. We returned in May with our two dogs and had a fantastic time and beautiful weather. The garden is amazing with such beautiful flowers and all you can hear is the sound of the birds. The dogs loved it and remained safely in the garden with the freedom to explore. The cottage is steeped in history and has a beautiful open fire for the cooler evenings. There are walks straight from the door step and easy access to the coast and local villages. Sonia and Simon are great hosts.

We stayed there 3 months ago , but Horry Mill still shines brightly in my memory. This is an enchanted place. It felt like going on holiday to my childhood. If you love the deep peace of woods, steep valleys of flowers and birdsong, cattle grazing in small fields, ancient oak trees, then it's for you. You can walk everywhere: you won't need the car. The walk to Winkleigh (pubs, real post office, shop, butcher, cafes, church) is lovely and quiet, except for short stretch of busy road. Best of all is the cottage itself: beautiful, authentic, comfy, cosy, an open fire AND a Rayburn – just heaven.

What a lovely place! So remote and quiet, beautiful wild garden , lovely house and exceptional weather. Sonia and Simon are perfect hosts and the welcome pack was delicious. What's not to like?

Our third visit to Horry Mill but the first in 3 years. When we arrived it felt like we had never left. Sonia and Simon are so welcoming and when the week was up we didn't want to leave. Thank you and see you again soon.

When we first stayed at Horry Mill about 15 years ago we found our perfect hideaway. The charming cottage is well equipped and comfortable with a beautiful garden and wonderful walks with our dogs straight from the door. Sonia and Simon could not be more welcoming and we have returned at least once a year, sometimes with children and grandchildren who have also fallen under its spell.

Sonia and Simon are the perfect hosts and as with a previous visit we enjoyed our stay enormously. We were greeted by them with scones and Devon cream for tea. Fresh eggs were provided during our stay. Horry Mill is set in a wonderful remote wooded valley in beautiful countryside. The cottage was perfect and provided all our needs but above all the peace and tranquillity of this special place remains engrained in our memory. Thank you.

We had a wonderful holiday at Horry Mill. The cottage is lovely and the location even better. There is a large private garden surrounded by wooded slopes and wild flowers with chickens and ducks happily pottering around nearby. Sonia and Simon are very generous hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them. Wonderful walks straight from the house but if you want to go further afield there is ample opportunity for all that Dartmoor has to offer. Perfect peace and relaxation.

We had a fantastic family holiday at Horry Mill. The setting is utterly peaceful and beautiful. There are walks from the door and private gardens and woodlands to explore. We had lots of adventures on Dartmoor then came back to wander round the meadow or to drink wine by the fire or - my favourite place - in the vine filled summer house. Perhaps the best thing about Horry Mill are the kind and generous hosts. Our daughters were allowed to collect eggs every day, we found flowers, chocolates and a cream tea waiting for us and there are lots of logs for the fire. We felt very lucky to stay here.

Horry Mill is a very special place to visit. Superb location in a quiet mid-Devon valley, nothing but birdsong and the occasional horse and rider walking past the kitchen disturbs the peace and quiet. Sonia and Simon are perfect hosts, always there if you need them but leave you to your space. Great walks from the door, or spend a sunny day in the garden with a good book. We did both.

It is hard to find the words to describe just what a beautiful place Horry Mill is. This well equipped cottage is cosy, spacious and full of character with lovely views from every window. It’s peaceful setting, in a huge flower-filled garden on the edge of woodland is just stunning, we enjoyed varied walks from the door, and spent hours watching the amazing array of wild birds and other wildlife which visited daily. Sonia and Simon are a really lovely couple who made us feel so welcome, this was our first visit and we are looking forward to returning in October.

Wonderful stay at Horry Mill. There was absolutely everything in the cottage that you could want - cream tea when we arrived, flowers, chocolates and deliveries of eggs. The cottage was warm and comfortable with a wonderful log fire, and full of books, puzzles etc. It was such a lovely place that you could easily not leave the cottage and surrounding area for your whole stay. Maggie, our Jack Russell was equally at home and enjoyed the numerous walks through the woods. Our thanks to Sonia and Simon for their hospitality. We can't wait to return.

We had a lovely stay in the cottage on the farm at Horry Mill. There is a long drive that leads to a very pretty valley setting, full of meadow flowers. The house is comfortable and clean and the hosts are accommodating and helpful but unobtrusive. The local villages are only a short drive away and there are interesting walks starting straight across the brook.
