The Experience

Walking into this converted barn instantly lifts your spirits. You’re in one huge room with a shower off it, and everything is in here – bed, sofa, little kitchen, but it doesn’t feel hugger mugger at all, instead it is ordered, calm and rather swish. The beautifully-made bed has feather pillows and duvet, the fabric blinds are thick, you’ll find bath robes, home produced organic soap and fresh flowers from the garden.

You’re on the owners’ 17th-century farm and there’s another holiday barn – but if you go out of your back door you can’t see anybody and nobody can see you. Lovely to sit out here birdwatching or chatting with a glass of wine while you barbecue supper and admire the sunset and the views over to Dorset and Somerset. Ask Alice about buying their homegrown meat and charcuterie – they also have a mate with a micro-brewery called Gyle 59 nearby and can organise tastings on a neighbouring farm.

Walking is sublime, either at the coast or inland for hilly strolls.

Reviews

We had a very relaxing stay at Horseshoe Barn over the Christmas break. The space is so much bigger than it looks in the photos(!). We met Alice who was very welcoming, and tried the sausages, bacon and charcuterie made on their farm which were all delicious. Our favourite thing was falling asleep to the sound of the rain on the roof (it was probably the rainiest week of the year), and we really miss it now we are home!

Sarah, London

Lovely stay at Horseshoe Barn, really enjoyed exploring this part of Dorset/Devon and discovered some great walks and some excellent places to eat out. Maybe provide a few more mugs.

Nicky, Manchester

Bottle Farm is delightful. Horseshoe Barn was so stylish, well appointed and tranquil. We could only stay for a weekend but would like to return and stay for longer, enjoying the local walks and coastal delights close by.

Lisa, Cirencester

We had the most beautiful stay at Bottle Farm. The studio was so modern and clean, situated in the most idyllic spot on the farm looking over the cow fields. It was private with your very own outdoor fire. We woke up to a supply of warm bread and eggs ready for us to cook in the morning. Such lovely touches and memorable trip. Situated in a great location if you want to explore Dorset and Devon. Would highly recommend!

Lily, London

Beautiful stay in horseshoe barn, generous spacious size for two. Idyllic location and views over the valley, such a peaceful setting.Alice and Hugo were very welcoming with suggestions of local walks, restaurants and places to visit. We would definitely recommend and would happily return.

Alison, Coventry

Horseshoe barn was all we hoped for. Our own lovely, spacious place with beautiful views complete with cows & goats that greeted us each day. Alice & Hugo are wonderful hosts with plenty of suggestions for where to hike or eat. When we didn’t plan they came to the rescue with charcuterie and a cider. We decided to extend our stay and are so happy we did.

Karen, San Francisco

Peaceful location and beautifully presented accommodation. The bed is particularly comfortable and the pillows & linen are luxury. We tried the bacon & sausages which we very much enjoyed and recommend that you try them too. Friendly and helpful hosts.

Kate, Frensham Farnham Surrey

We had such a great time in Horseshoe Barn which was the perfect place to stay and exceeded our expectations! The barn was beautifully set up and extremely well equipped. It had everything we needed for our stay, including little extras like salt, pepper, oil etc and the bread and eggs on our arrival. Always appreciated. The luxurious bathroom and bath robes were nice touches, the super sized bed extremely comfortable! A beautiful, peaceful setting, we enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings. It’s a great location for visiting different parts of Dorset and Devon. Thank you!

Janet and Stephen

You could stay for weeks and still not make the most of everything around you: walks, cycles, picnics, beaches, great food and local producers, interesting history and sweet villages to explore.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Shave Cross Inn does good beer - it's just down the road. Thorncombe (two miles) is the nearest village, and you'll find good shops and weekly markets in Axminster and Bridport, plus two decent farmshops nearby - Millers and Felicity's. You can join the Wessex Trail at the end of the drive and the nearest beach is Charmouth (five miles) but Lyme is only seven. Visit Castlewood Vineyard.

Local points of interest from Hugo & Alice Shuttleworth

  • Bottle Farm sits at the foot of Lambert's Castle, a National Trust hill fort that rises over the Marshwood Vale with spectacular views to the sea. Walk on down to the beach at Charmouth if you are feeling energetic!
  • We make organic charcuterie on the farm. Try some Devon salami or culatello while sipping sparkling wine made by friends down the road, or a beer from the microbrewery which is just visible on the farm across the valley.
  • Bridport's bustling Saturday market is a great place to spend the morning - sipping coffee, checking out the antique and vintage quarter and soaking up its laid back atmosphere.
  • Alice used to lead walking trips in Patagonia and off the beaten tracks of Spain. Now she is an expert on local walking routes and will happily show you where to go whether you want a gentle stroll or a serious hike.
  • East Devon is a foodie hotspot - do a cookery course at River Cottage or Trill Farm, visit local vineyards and try a supper club or restaurant. We are happy to point you in the right direction for some hidden gems.
  • Go on a fishing trip with Harry May down at Lyme Regis, or hire a little motor boat from Simon at Beer and try your hand at catching some mackerel for the barbecue. At Charmouth you can learn to paddle board - or hunt for fossils on the beach.

Introducing

Hugo & Alice Shuttleworth

Hugo has a background in catering and Alice organised tours for the Alternative Travel Group - they were living in the Cotswolds but had a combined passion for food and the sea. Moving here seemed the obvious solution. They now have their own pigs, sheep and chickens on this very pretty smallholding. They're just in the farmhouse if you need them but will otherwise leave you to your holiday.
