The Experience

Plenty of wood, slate floors and fresh flowers from the garden give an elemental feel to the interiors of what was an ancient farm building. Owners Sarah and Craig, who live next door in the thatched cottage have done much of the renovation work themselves. It’s a generous and relaxing space with an open-plan living/dining and kitchen area, a wood-burner and books and games. You’ll find cooking essentials in the cupboards, plus bread or croissants and sweet treats for your arrival. The gallery bedroom upstairs has another sofa and a desk with a grand view. A little outside seating area is reached through doors from the living room – lovely to have your first morning cup of tea out here. The mature garden has further seating areas, and is filled with trees, shrubs and flowers, connected by paths and dry-stone walls. Listen out for birds, spot hedgehogs.

Spend days on nearby beaches (borrow towels, a picnic bag and a thermos flask too), gentle walks start from the door (you can walk to a wild swimming spot), or hike on lovely Dartmoor. The peace is deep but you’re only five miles from Totnes.

Reviews

A peaceful and elegant space, plus a garden teeming with birds. This is super for walkers and cyclists close to the coast but also Dartmoor - it would make a marvellous retreat for a writer too.

Rachel, Oxfordshire

A delightful break, even in January! Peaceful and quiet with many interesting places nearby in this beautiful part of the world. Sarah and Craig have thought of everything to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable - the studio is tasteful and very comfortable - will be going again - can definitely recommend it!!

Julie, Banbury

Great place for a winter break. Very comfortable and cosy. Loved exploring Totnes, Ashburton and Darlington Hall and great walks from the Studio. Must be lovely when all the spring flowers are out. We’ll be back!

Graham & Andy, London

This must be one of the most relaxing stays we have ever had. Everything about the accommodation has been thought through very carefully, and we lacked for nothing. The studio manages to be both spacious and cosy, and we appreciated the wood-burner, and all the little touches - candles and tealights, garden flowers in jars, croissants, herbs on the table, and a very well-equipped kitchen. Sarah and Craig could not be more helpful and friendly, and were always on hand if we needed anything.

Celia, London

Fabulous! Ivy Studio: Comfortable & chic. Wonderful walks, peace & calm. Easy driving distance to vibrant Totnes. Charming hosts.

Location

The neighbourhood

Diptford is a quiet village with a medieval church, St Mary the Virgin. One of the nearest good pubs, the Church Inn, is in Harberton, a 12-minute drive, but there are good places to eat and independent shops in Totnes - also a market on Fridays and Saturdays. There are walking and cycling trails criss-crossing the area, Dartmoor is only 25 minutes in the car for rugged hikes and the coast is close.

Local points of interest from Sarah & Craig Taylor

  • Totnes town boasts many independent shops with cafes selling indulgent cakes & pastries. Market days are the place to find bargain vintage items, delicious take-away food, beautiful hand-craft and interesting organic fashion.
  • Sharpham Estate overlooks the stunning River Dart with beautiful walks and a great outdoor cafe open in the summer. Its thousand year old farm now produces fine wine and cheese which you can visit.
  • Dartington Hall Estate is an award-winning Devon destination! 1,200 acres offer woodland walks and riverside trails to cafes, restaurants and shops, art and craft activities, theatre, music and dance events as well as the wonderful Barn Cinema!
  • Powderham Castle home of the Earl of Devon has an exciting range of entertainment with pop-up restaurants as well as stunning grounds and gardens to visit. Berry Pomeroy Castle is tucked away in a deep wooded valley - the perfect romantic ruin!
  • Buckfast Abbey near Buckfastleigh forms part of an active Benedictine monastery famous for its tonic wine since the 1920s! A beautifully peaceful place to worship or visit with lovely grounds, gardens, exhibitions, book and produce shops and a restaurant.
  • Beaches to visit - spoilt for choice and we can point you in the direction of one or two more secluded and quieter beaches as well when you're here! Beachhouse (South Milton Sands) is a laidback foodie destination right on the beach itself.
