The Experience

Drive past the owners’ 17th-century farmhouse and into your own courtyard. Here you’ll find Meadow Barn and an attractive wooden store room opposite. Walk straight into an open-plan space with a double bed at one end, a sofa in the middle and the kitchen along one wall. It’s not huge but exceptionally high ceilings make it feel spacious. Big bi-folding doors and Velux windows let the light flood in and underfloor heating keeps you cosy.

You’ll find eggs from the farm hens, biscuits from Moores Biscuits down the road (makers of the famous Dorset Knob), a loaf of homemade sourdough and all the basics. Ask Alice about buying their homegrown meat and charcuterie – they also have a mate with a micro-brewery nearby and can do tastings. The gravelled garden round the back has a table and chairs and a firepit with logs (and marshmallows) provided.

You’re at the foot of the National Trust Lambert’s Castle for superb walking and views over the Marshwood Vale.

Reviews

Foodies, nature-lovers, walkers, beachcombers and fossil hunters will be delighted. It's a relaxed and comfortable place to stay and from here you can explore this most beautiful part of Devon, right on the Dorset border.

This is a lovely place to stay, beautifully designed and with welcoming touches like fresh garden flowers and delicious bread and other basics. Although there is another, equally good looking barn nearby, both properties have private sitting out areas and the views are wonderful. We would love to stay again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the property.

Anna, Weston Super Mare

We had a lovely stay in meadow barn for 2 nights .just wished we could of stayed for longer. The barn was beautifully done with all the requirements for a very relaxing stay . A lovely outside area to watch the sun rise . Would thoroughly recommend the sausages and bacon that we bought of Alice and Hugo.

Samantha, Lane End

Beautiful rural setting, delightful barns with all you needs to escape and relax for a few days. The barns were spacious, clean and cosy and we had a lovely break away. The handmade loaf of bread was delicious too!

Janine, London

We have just returned to London from the most idyllic holiday. Meadow barn is reached from a narrow, winding lane. On arrival we were greeted by hydrangeas and sweet peas decorating the room, and a gift of eggs and yummy bread. The barn itself was a perfect location, very quite, with a pretty private garden, only over-looked by cows. It was in a great position for us to travel from, to access countryside and beaches around. We hope to return... many thanks Alice.

Location

The neighbourhood

The Shave Cross Inn does good beer - it's just down the road. Thorncombe (two miles) is the nearest village, and you'll find good shops and weekly markets in Axminster and Bridport, plus two decent farmshops nearby - Millers and Felicity's. You can join the Wessex Trail at the end of the drive and the nearest beach is Charmouth (five miles) but Lyme is only seven.

Local points of interest from Hugo & Alice Shuttleworth

  • We make organic charcuterie on the farm. Try some Devon salami or culatello while sipping sparkling wine made by friends down the road, or a beer from the microbrewery which is just visible on the farm across the valley.
  • Bottle Farm sits at the foot of Lambert's Castle, a National Trust hill fort that rises over the Marshwood Vale with spectacular views to the sea. Walk on down to the beach at Charmouth if you are feeling energetic!
  • East Devon is a foodie hotspot - do a cookery course at River Cottage or Trill Farm, visit local vineyards and try a supper club or restaurant. We are happy to point you in the right direction for some hidden gems.
  • Bridport's bustling Saturday market is a great place to spend the morning - sipping coffee, checking out the antique and vintage quarter and soaking up its laid back atmosphere.
  • Go on a fishing trip with Harry May down at Lyme Regis, or hire a little motor boat from Simon at Beer and try your hand at catching some mackerel for the barbecue. At Charmouth you can learn to paddle board - or hunt for fossils on the beach.
  • Alice used to lead walking trips in Patagonia and off the beaten tracks of Spain. Now she is an expert on local walking routes and will happily show you where to go whether you want a gentle stroll or a serious hike.

Introducing

Hugo & Alice Shuttleworth

Hugo has a background in catering and Alice organised tours for the Alternative Travel Group - they were living in the Cotswolds but had a combined passion for food and the sea. Moving here seemed the obvious solution. They now have their own pigs, sheep and chickens on this very pretty smallholding. They're just in the farmhouse if you need them but will otherwise leave you to your holiday.
