The Experience

The sturdy old granary, with stone steps to the first floor shiny from years of use, stands next to the owners’ house, which is a plus: Lucia and Dan are utterly charming and fun. Other barns are dotted about, handsome but ripe for conversion. The Nest at Swallows’ Flight is ideal for two, and a couple of kids besides, thanks to the comfy sofabed.

It’s a friendly open space you walk right into, with a rug-topped Marmoleum floor and an airy, vaulted ceiling. A wood-burner sits against the end wall, there’s a chunky table and a neat bank of kitchen units alongside one window, with a low cushioned window seat – sweet for a child. The bed, beneath a feathered globe hanging from the rafters, is perfectly dressed; the bathroom (a lovely roll top tub, a retro sink) is private.

Games in the trunk, logs in the basket – and, if you run out of the basics, a shop a mile away.

Reviews

Andrew, Basingstoke

Swallow’s Nest was an excellent choice for us, a couple celebrating our wedding anniversary, wanting to be back in one of our favourite places, the South Hams of Devon. We received a warm welcome from our hosts, Lucia and Dan, and quickly settled in to the beautifully appointed apartment. Pictures and mugs all had a Swallow theme, with the birds themselves raising a brood within a few feet of the door. The farmstead with its holiday accommodation provides a welcome retreat from the usual pace of life, with fields and lanes to explore and beaches nearby. Great place, excellent hosts.

Mark, Reigate

We (myself, my wife and our 8 y.o. son) stayed at the Nest Barn for a week vacation over Easter. The accommodation is set in a barn away from the owners own property, within impeccably kept gardens with ample parking. The accommodation is beautifully appointed and furnished to a high standard; the owners have been really considered in providing all the amenities that could be needed on a family break. The huge bonus was the 'rooftop hot-tub', which was an absolute delight in the evening. Lucia is an outstanding host, where nothing really is too much trouble; an amazing vacation.

Nick, Twickenham

The welcome and hospitality of the hosts was amazing and the ability to utilise all of the grounds was most appreciated, not least by baby Scarlett! The added bonus of a babysitter on tap allowing a Friday night out was very much appreciated.... A delightful spot in the beautiful countryside with excellent ice cream to boot. No doubt a return will be on the cards.

I’m writing this from the tube which feels a million miles from the wonderful Devon landscape. Thank you so much for a truly lovely vacation. It’s always a treat hanging out at Swallows Flight and you make us feel so welcome. It was great to also meet your friends and have a few drinks together. We very much hope to be back soon!

Natasha, Oxford

We had the most wonderful stay at Swallows Flight. Everything was touched with a little magic - the barn beautifully equipped, the wood burner toasty and the hot tub a real treat. The location is perfect for exploring Devon and there is no shortage of stuff to do and eat. Our 8 and 5 year olds had a blast and the Blys are just fab - welcoming, helpful and super friendly. We hope to go back soon. Highly recommended.

Location

The neighbourhood

You are in the pretty South Hams, surrounded by 1000 acres of dairy farmland and with stunning views of the rolling hills. Chillington village is half a mile for local shops, post office and a pub serving freshly-caught fish and locally-farmed meat and veg – and of course a pint of the local brew. The nearest beach is 5 minutes by car and Kingsbridge, the nearest town, is 5 miles for restaurants.

Local points of interest from Lucia & Dan Bly

  • The coast is our passion, we like to walk to our nearest beach AONB Slapton Sands for an afternoon's sun seeking or storm watching - it's stunning whatever the weather! We are close to many other lovely beaches and a full guide written by us is in the barn
  • We are a greedy bunch and love locally farmed (or caught!) food. There are many wonderful foodie places to eat out in the South Hams, but our favourites are Riverford Farm Field Kitchen for seasonal gastronomy and The Oyster Shack for freshest seafood
  • As we're into all things vintage, you can regularly find us in Totnes on market day hunting out bargains at the antique stalls and browsing the high street recently voted as one of the world's funkiest towns. Salcombe & Dartmouth are also great for a mooch
  • There are many lovely walks in the area and one of our favourites is along the River Dart with stunning views.
  • One of the best ways to get to know our area is by boat. This could be as low-key as borrowing a couple of our family kayaks and paddling around the Salcombe Estuary to an adventure hiring a day boat in Dartmouth or catching the ferry in Kingsbridge.
  • We run an ice cream and chocolate company in nearby Salcombe, and some of our four offspring can be found working there too, we have five local shops/beach cafés

Introducing

Lucia & Dan Bly

Alongside running the holiday barns Lucia is an integral part of the family business – the award-winning Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream and the Bean to Bar Salcombe Chocolate, both very delicious.
