The Experience

A triumph of style and design. Inspiring duo Carl and Peet have transformed an old livestock building into a sleek space with interesting stuff – much made by them – at every turn: carved wooden stools and seating, quirky light shades, an oak and perspex chandelier, striking fabrics and wall hangings. The attention to detail is impressive.

They live in the main farmhouse (pop in on Thursdays for tea, cake and a peek at their wares), and there are other buildings dotted around but the one-storey Piggery is an oasis of calm.

Take a seat in the private garden after a walk by the Avon and enjoy some home-produced apple juice overlooking the orchard. Whip up supper in the attractive kitchen, throwing open the bi-folds if it’s sunny, or firing up the wood-burner on nippy nights.

Reviews

This quirky converted piggery, full of art and character, is the perfect place to unwind and get away from it all. Or explore the massive amount that the area has to offer- from beaches to yoga classes and plenty of walks. Eat well (Carl and Peet have a massive amount of recommendations) and then don't forget to explore the farm itself- a plethora of wildlife and biodiversity, along with a load of art to admire, and perhaps purchase.

Alex, Kingsbridge

Our stay at The Piggery was a wonderful experience. The view is lovely from the south facing living space opening onto the garden and it was very peaceful with birdsong all around and sheep cropping the grass in the surrounding orchard (apple juice also available!). The layout is great and it's super well equipt outside (including BBQ) and inside there is plentiful kitchen equipment- enough to make a full roast if desired! We especially loved all the wood carving and the felt art in the house, which is so tactile and interesting and makes the place feel so cosy and unique - stunning!

Jane, Bridport

The Piggery is definitely one of the best places we've stayed in. The beds are so comfortable and the kitchen is wonderful and has everything you could possibly need. The garden and orchard are an absolute delight and get the sun all day. Nature is just allowed to be everywhere, flowers just thrive where they are happiest. Everything just grows where it wants to. The peace and calm the Piggery generates is just something that has to be experienced. Just be sure to turn off the road at the sign that says "Ham Farm" on a wooden post carved in Peet and Carl's unique style on arrival.

We had a lovely few days at the Piggery. It is a very unique and beautifully decorated space, with an artist’s eye to details, really a pleasure to experience. Beautiful colours, clean, comfy beds and linen, and one of the most well equipped kitchens of any Airbnb we’ve stayed in. The garden, orchards and landscape are beautiful and there is plenty to do in the area much helped by Peet’s thorough guidebook and recommendations. Highly recommended, we hope to visit again.

Alice, Hove

We loved every minute of our stay at The Piggery. A beautiful, tranquil, relaxing space with a lovely picture window to sit at and look out over the orchard and hills. Our children played cards while my husband and I read our books - perfect. The attention to detail is fabulous. Inspiring inside and out. The walk from there along the river is stunning. 10/10

Location

The neighbourhood

The Piggery is right in the centre of the South Hams and just a 15-minute walk from Loddiswell village where you’ll find a Spar shop, cafes, a pub, post office and garden centre. Kingsbridge, a larger town, is 3.5 miles away and has a wide range of shops, supermarkets and eateries. The dramatic scenery of Dartmoor is a 25-minute drive, as are the golden sands and independent shops of bustling, boaty Salcombe.

Local points of interest from Peet Hahn

  • Well situated a short walk away from Loddiswell, and right in the centre of the South Hams, The Piggery offers easy access to the stunning coastline with its famous South West Coast Path, beautiful and secluded beaches or magnificent Dartmoor 15mins drive.
  • No need to drive.. walk across the farm down the magical and ancient Silveridge Lane to the peaceful River Avon. You can choose to stay on our side of the river and climb back up to us via the neighbouring Reeds Farm. A real pleasure throughout the year.
  • Across the Avon and to the right eventually takes you to Avon Mill Garden Centre with its cafe and deli. Indulge yourself in one of the best cream teas and try to walk back up the steep climb to the footpath back to The Piggery
  • We are in a perfect spot to drive to any of the wonderful beaches, coves and rugged coastline. Or within 15 mins, the magnificent expanse of Dartmoor is yours to explore. Look to the sky and choose - we can advise on some of the best spots - just ask!
  • Our Orchard is our pride and joy. All of October is taken up with harvesting, crushing, juicing and cider making .. We welcome extra hands however tiny and often end up lunching with the team in the Farmhouse kitchen.. Apple juice, cider and chutneys here.
  • The Farmhouse is open to Piggery guests at mutually agreeable times or between 2pm and 6pm on Thursdays when cakes are on offer... we are both happy to answer questions about our work and the farm and can give a guided tour - you can try on a hat or two..
