The Experience
Step through French doors to a warmly inviting, beamed, open-plan living space with a sleek kitchen at one end, comfy sofas arranged around a wood-burner at the other and a long wooden dining table in the middle. It’s a super space for all being together: cooking, reading, playing board games, watching TV. An oak staircase leads down to three good-sized bedrooms – the master has an en suite and one can be a big double or a twin – all have country views.
Soak up the sun in the walled courtyard, fire up the barbecue and enjoy al fresco meals at a table made from threshing wheels found in the barn; let kids and dogs run free in the large, enclosed garden dotted with trees and wildflowers. It’s peaceful here, the only sounds are birdsong and the occasional machinery rumble from the farm nearby.
Stroll 20 minutes to Church House Inn for a cracking Sunday roast or a pub supper; for seafood try the award-winning Oyster Shack in Bigbury. The coast is a 15-minute drive.

What a delightful stay in the beautiful Threshing Barn. Slept better than we have for many months. It’s such a peaceful place to wake up - a gentle green valley with a river running through it. Good cafe and farm shop 20 mins walk through the country lanes, another one half a mile further. Seaside town of Kingsbridge 8 mins drive and of course the famous Burgh Island of Agatha Christie fame with its dramatic coastline, safe sandy beaches, surfing & kayaking just over the hill.

Thank you for a wonderful few days. The Barn is so comfortable. We have had so much fun. Lovely breakfast at the café 20 mins walk up the road. Walks at Gara Rock, Thurlestone and one gloriously sunny day walking from Mill Cove to Gara Rock. We got the ferry over to Salcombe, had a delicious lunch and walk around the shops. The Barn is stunning and so relaxing. Many thanks.

We have always used Sawdays for our holidays and never been disappointed. Our latest stay was at The Threshing Barn in Devon. It was in a beautiful location and the barn itself was sensitively restored and spacious. We all had a fantastic stay and will be booking again. The hosts were helpful and informative and we had everything we needed. The outside space was also perfect for our family - lots of cricket outside in the evenings was an additional bonus! Thank you.

Location
The neighbourhood
The tiny hamlet of Higher Hatch is 0.8 miles from Churchstow for a village shop, post office and pub or to Aune Valley butchers, farm shop, deli and cafe – both a 20-minute walk. Kingsbridge is 3 miles for bigger shops and a cinema. Bantham, Bigbury and Thurlestone beaches are all four miles, Hope Cove 6. Dartmoor is a 25-30 min drive.
Local points of interest from Simon & Teresa
- Wake up to uninterrupted views of the Devon countryside and Avon valley. The river becomes tidal within 2 miles. A 2-hour walk takes you down to Aveton Gifford (National Cycle Route 28) and along the estuary on the tidal road and out to Burgh Island
- 20 minutes walk to the village to pick up a paper, enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the garden and plan your day. Enjoy a sundowner in the courtyard & watch the swifts swallows & house martins swooping overhead
- Walk along shady lanes scented with bluebell & wild garlic to the Oyster Shack or Crab Shell Inn within a 1 hour walk or Aune Valley Café even closer (20 minutes)
- 50 miles of coast within 15-30 minutes drive – Newton Ferrers to Dartmouth. Hire a board or bike from Churchstow & take your pick of beaches or rides or a stretch of the South West Coastal path. And work up an appetite for a feast at Wild Artichokes
- Take a wine tasting tour at the Calancombe Estate or Modbury (20 minutes) or visit the Plymouth Gin factory (40 minutes) and take in some history around the Hoe & Barbican
- And then there’s Dartmoor to explore! Over 160 Tors to climb or, if you prefer, antiquing in Ashburton (30 minutes), eat at Emilia’s or Rafikis or sign up for a cooking class at Ashburton Cookery School

Introducing
Simon & Teresa
Simon and Teresa always wanted a place by the sea. They spotted this tumbledown barn and spent several years carefully converting it, with the aid of an excellent team of artisan builders. Teresa is a conservator with a great eye for design and detail which shines through in this immaculate and warmly welcoming conversion.
The owner and agents were really helpful with booking arrangements for our week long holiday. They agreed a change of start date after we had booked. The house is just what we expected. A lovely rural setting for an exceptional restoration of an old farm building. Plenty of outdoor spaces and light and spacious living room. Very well equipped kitchen and the beds are extremely comfortable. We found a different beach every day so made great use of an amazingly hot sunny week.
