The Experience
The barn sits demurely in a little village surrounded by green hills and farmland. There’s a pretty courtyard garden to one side with benches, tables and chairs for a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and a huge paddock full of wildflowers in spring and summer which you’re free to potter around. Should it be chilly you can retreat to the sitting room with squishy sofas, plenty of books, pictures and ornaments.
Bedrooms (one on the ground floor, one upstairs) have clouds of goose down, thoughtful lighting and smart en suite bathrooms. Breakfast starts with a kefir shot, a plate of fresh fruit with Greek yogurt, and croissants. A full English includes local sausages and bacon, oven-roasted tomatoes and eggs cooked as you like. Omelettes are offered and vegetarians and vegans happily fed too. It’s a spoiling sort of place.
Walk, cycle, explore Honiton, visit gardens, treat yourselves to dinner at The Pig at Combe, 10 minutes away.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in the Terrace Suite, where nothing was too much trouble for our wonderful, welcoming hosts. So much thought and detail had gone into everything from Ants' wonderful breakfast spread, home-made cakes in the afternoon and slice for the journey home, to the dreamy Hypnos beds, relaxing décor and spotless bedroom and lounge areas. The weather was beyond everyone's control, but Ants and Lance were only too happy to give us plenty of ideas, directions, maps and recommendations to cover all eventualities. Thank you Ants, Lance (and Tilly the cat)!

Just FANTASTIC! Ants and Lance met us with warm smiles and a homemade cake as we arrived. Their warmth and friendliness never stopped! Even the slice of cake continued daily. Our beautiful room was cleaned and tidied daily, and the breakfast was AMAZING, I asked Ants for so many recipes! So much care was taken over my coeliac statues too. They know the area intimately and took great interest in making sure we had the best time, advising us of the best restaurants and places to visit. It’s as if they want to really treat their guests, they are naturals at this! They have created a calm haven.

Wow, what a wonderful bed and breakfast Underhill Barn is. It has everything you want and more with all those extra touches. Ants and Lance are SO accommodating and nothing is too much trouble. We felt so welcome and leaving was quite hard as it is such a relaxing and calm place to stay. I feel sure we will stay there again. Thank you.

Location
The neighbourhood
There are footpaths from the door but start by looking at the sweet church with its 12th-century font and ancient treble bell. Colyton is two miles away and has three pubs, a café and a couple of small shops. Honiton, four miles, an ancient Lace Town, has bigger shops and a lively street market every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Blackbury Camp is nearby and the south coast beaches are a short hop.
Local points of interest from Anthony Letcher
- With access to coast and country pack your walking boots and swimming cozzie. Blackberry Camp is a 45 minute walk, whilst Branscombe beach is just over 10 minutes by car.
- Explore the South West Coastal Path in East Devon and nearby Dorset. Particular favourites are the walks around the Golden Cap, one of the highest points on the Southern coast.
- The Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site runs 95 miles east from Exmouth to Old Harry’s Rocks near Swanage in Dorset and is easily accessible at Beer, Sidmouth and Branscome, fancy paddleboarding or sea canoeing?
- Eat delicious local produce from nearby sea and land that will get your tastebuds tingling and check out some amazing farm emporia at Greendale and Darts Farm that stocks the best of the Southwest. Visit the Darts farm website for more information.
- Star quality dining; East Devon and nearby Dorset has some amazing places to eat. Glebe House is above us and Robin Wylde, The Oyster & Fish House and Lympstone Manor are all between 20 and 40 minutes drive from Underhill Barn.
- Along the A303 to us, the National Trust have some great attractions en-route, Stourhead & Tintinhull Gardens or if the weather isn’t so great, Montacute house or Lytes Cary Manor.

Introducing
Anthony Letcher
Anthony and Lance live in the other half of the barn and are extremely friendly and helpful. They wanted to move to the West Country for many years but busy careers in London along with family commitments got in the way. They look after you with aplomb and are very happy to be here, along with Tilly the tabby cat, who also prefers Devon.
A lovely place to stay in Devon. Ants and Lance couldn't have been more hospitable and I would recommend very highly.
