The Experience

Rural chic at its best! A thatched 18th-century cottage bursting with character and clutter-free style. Dreamy window seats, an inglenook fireplace, oak floorboards and latch doors, exposed beams, cob walls, wood-burners, a rustic antique dining table, a vintage leather armchair… fresh flowers, soft furnishings, candles and contemporary artwork complete the picture. Picasso print line drawings dot the kitchen – a long, narrow Victorian addition with stone flooring, a painted dresser and all you’ll need. Up the cottagey stairs to the oh-so-pretty bedrooms, light and luxuriously carpeted with views of church, water meadows and woods beyond. Both have king-size, French style, cream iron beds, crisp white cotton and chests of drawers; the larger gets a buttonback chair, the smaller, a cast-iron fireplace, and the spacious bathroom between them has sumptuous towels and toiletries. All this, and a herb and flower-planted garden, in the quietest part of a most attractive village in Dorset. Fantastic for cycling and chalk ridge walks, and a ten-minute drive from Georgian Blandford. It’ll be hard to leave.

Reviews

This is the third time we've stayed at the cottage, and it's become a home from home. Idyllically situated in the centre of the village, it's a perfect Dorset thatched cottage, sensitively and luxuriously renovated. There are masses of beautiful walks from the front door, and Blandford Forum is very close for supermarkets and coffee shops and so forth. It makes a wonderful base for a touring holiday of the county - easy to get to Dorchester and further on to the sea. Emma left a very welcoming basket of treats for us, and everything was immaculate and ready for our stay. Can't wait to return!

As soon as we arrived at this very attractive cottage we felt welcomed and at home. Lovely treats for us and the dog and everything as it should be. Brilliant location to explore the spectacular coast, verdant countryside and interesting small towns and NT properties of Dorset. Would definitely recommend.

This is a perfect place to unwind for a week. Cottage is spacious, oozing with character and with a nice secure garden which was great for our dog. Beds/sofas very comfortable, central heating worked a treat and kitchen very well stocked. The village itself is lovely with church opposite (check out the delicious pop-up cafe there on Thursdays) giving lovely view from the cottage. Plenty of great walks from doorstep and around local villages. A bridle path 20 metres away from the front door leads onto spectacular countryside.

We had a very enjoyable stay. This delightful cottage is comfortable, clean and well looked after by its owner and her housekeeper. On arrival we also appreciated the fresh flowers and welcome treats. After exploring the beautiful and historic surroundings, the cottage was always a pleasure to come back to.

David, Newlyn

What a wonderful find! A true "chocolate box" country cottage that was full of character and oh so cosy! Immaculately clean with everything you might need, and the extra touches were so appreciated after a long journey. Very close to the coast and inland places of interest, easy directions and a lovely setting. Ample parking right outside the door. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are already contemplating a return to make use of the wonderful wood burners.

Sue, Thatcham

Beautiful, spotlessly clean, comfortable and well equipped cottage. A bonus was a very nice welcome pack. Not a lot of cottages goes to this trouble to welcome their guests. Cottage is well positioned to visit coastal areas plus inland villages. Our favorite being Lyme Regis and Corfe and inland, Sherbourne and Shaftesbury. Easy drive to visit local pubs and serving good food. A very enjoyable holiday and hopefully have the opportunity to return to explore more of what Dorset has to offer.

Menna, Swansea

A great location with lovely walks from the front door. Well equipped delightful cottage with an excellent "welcome" package to get any stay off to a good start. Highly recommended to spend a few relaxing days!!

Peter & Beth, Rye

We had a wonderfully relaxing week in this delightful cottage. The decor is just right, tasteful but homely and immaculately clean. We had a lovely bottle of wine and various other welcoming gifts (including treats for my dog) and every conceivable need was catered for. The beds were very comfortable. It is within easy driving distance of Cranborne Chase with its superb views. We fell in love with various villages: Iwerne Minster, Chettle and Farnham. The first two have lovely village shops (we had coffee at Iwerne a couple of times) and The Museum pub in Farnham was a good find.

Judy, Lewes

With 53Durweston we found our ideal holiday destination. A pretty cottage in a quiet rural location; spotlessly clean, comfortable with absolutely everything provided, and a secure sunny garden where we could relax with our dog.

Leon, Cheltenham

Lovely stay, very pretty cottage and wonderfully clean. Beds were super comfy which is always a plus. I can recommend this to anyone, and great location in peaceful village for exploring the local area. We had a great time.

Sarah, London

This is a perfect cottage in a wonderful location. Emma ensures a beautiful stay where you sense everything in every room smacks of quality. It is spotless throughout and very classy. You can eat in, or there's a romantic little garden and a lovely walk to the local Inn with good food and drink. We will be visiting for a third time when we can.

Stuart, Leamington Spa

This is a home away from home. The house is lovely and very well equipped, the host was very helpful and quick to respond and Durweston is a pretty little village set in some beautiful countryside. We would love to visit again.

Claire, Reigate

A beautiful cottage set in tranquil surroundings opposite the village church. The interior was fitted to a high standard and particularly tasteful. Everything we needed for a relaxing few days. Thanks Emma, a lovely property.

Martin, Oxford

Absolutely charming thatched cottage in a lovely part of Dorset. Absolutely spotless, with everything one might need, including lovely treats in the bathroom and a very thoughtful welcome hamper. We will definitely be returning, when we can!

We had a lovely week in this very comfortable cottage. Had everything we needed and the added extras were very welcome. Beautiful area with great local walking.

Liz, Birmingham

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at 53 Durweston. The cottage is extremely comfortable with everything you could possibly need and the bonus of two wood-burning stoves. It is well situated for country walks, the market town of Blandford Forum only a short distance away and the beautiful coastline within a 30-minute car ride. Emma provided lots of information on places of interest and good local pubs and shops. We would love to return next year.

Kay, Midhurst

An exceptionally lovely cottage in a beautiful part of Dorset. Spacious, cosy, beautiful, thoughtfully designed and equipped cottage, all the extras to make you feel cosseted. A real find - thank you so much Emma.

Lucy, London

We are an elderly couple who fell on our feet at 53 Durweston. Desperate to have a break during Covid, this was just what we needed. Well presented cottage, comfortable beds, squidgy pillows and soft towels, immaculately clean and to top it all - fresh flowers, bread, milk, wine, chocolate and treats for the dog. Excellent days out with the dog - the perfect get away. Thank you Emma, we have come back rejuvenated.

Local points of interest from Emma Perry

  • With so many beautiful walks from your doorstep you can certainly leave the car parked up for the day.
  • The lovely Georgian market town of Blandford Forum is just a short drive away although we like to put our walking shoes on and meander our way through the beautiful grounds of Bryanston School next to the river Stour
  • The stunning Jurassic Coast with cliff top walks and beautiful sandy beaches lies just 35 minutes away by car. Our favourite beach is Studland which boasts amazing views, horse riding, sailing and water sports. It really does cater for everyone.
  • The superb hill fort of Hod Hill has the greatest views over rural Dorset and is home to spectacular wild flowers and butterflies. Enjoy a breathtaking walk towards the summit of Hambledon Hill, an iron age Hill fort and why not take a picnic.
  • You may want to take the opportunity to visit Bath or Salisbury during your stay. They are both an easy drive away or you may choose to visit Shaftsbury and Gold Hill (which is where the memorable Hovis Ad was filmed)
  • Lovely local pubs for great food and drink. I will be very happy to introduce you to our favourites.
